We have all waited very patiently for the summer to arrive this year, bringing with it all of the outdoor arts events that help make the warm, sunny months in Portland so special.  And now that it's here, there is theater to be seen in the parks, dancing to be done in the streets, and — here's where we come in — live music to be heard at City Hall.

We are proud to partner with local music advocacy organization PDX Pop Now! for the fourth year to bring a free, all-ages, early evening concert of Portland music to the steps of City Hall.  Whether you like rock, jazz, folk or electronic music — or even just watching an eclectic crowd of locals and visitors mixing to a local soundtrack in the City Hall courtyard — it will be worth your while to swing by between 5:30 and 8:30 pm to be a part of this annual tradition that honors the important contributions of local musicians to our city, and provides the public with a free, inclusive, accessible opportunity to discover them.

Concert-goers will be treated to performances by: Read the rest of this entry »

About Big Head Todd And The Monsters
Big Head Todd and The Monsters' ninth studio album Rocksteady – due July 20 on the group's Big Records imprint, distributed by Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group – finds the veteran Colorado band returning to their DIY roots and forging into surprising musical territory.

Rocksteady is the latest chapter in a rock ‘n' roll career that stretches back nearly 25 years. Founded in 1986 by Mohr, Squires, and Nevin, then University of Colorado students, Big Head Todd and The Monsters became one of the region's most popular acts through constant touring. After issuing two popular independent releases on their Big imprint, the band hooked up with Irving Azoff's Giant Records for the platinum album Sister Sweetly (1993). The Monsters issued four chart albums on Giant and Warner Bros.

Their formidable reputation rests on their stage performances; Big Head Todd and The Monsters Live was recorded on the fabled H.O.R.D.E. tour. Over the years, the group has developed a close relationship with their fans: Their last album, All the Love You Need, was released as a free download, and was snapped up by half a million of The Monsters' followers. Free Portland Sunday Concert Series @ Rontoms

From our partners at Rontoms (photo from Portland Hamburgers):

Special Performances from the Golden Hours, Orca Team, and El Rey!!
Sunday, July 18th, 9pm FREE. IT'S FREE! It's Always Free…

Thanks to everyone who made last week's Loch Lomond show a smashing success, this week we welcome three very different, totally killer lo-fi(ish) pop groups — the Golden Hours,  Orca Team, and El Rey!!

Headlining tonight's show, The Golden Hours are as sweet and fuzzed out a pop band as you could ever hope to find. This quietly prodicious four piece recall a sweeter Raveonettes, a poppier Thee Oh Sees, and a rougher Yo La Tengo in equal measure.  Singer Eliza Sohn uses the fuzzier vocal effects expertly, never hiding behind them, instead enhancing the songs themselves with a richer, fuller pop vibe.  It's no understatement to say that the unitiated will walk out smitten, flabbergasted not to know them already.

Joining The Golden Hours is the wonderful Orca Team, who lean a bit more lo-fi than the Golden Hourss brighter, twinklier tunes. A perfect compliment to tonight's other bands, Orca Team's minimal, spaced-out kick is oddly timeless. Rooted in early experimental rock without sounding derivative or, Orca Team take a sound that, in the wrong, hands, might sound oddly retro, but in theirs is wonderfully futuristic.

Rounding out the bill, El Rey embrace their throwback underpinnings for a delightfully 60's rock sound!

Click here to download “Satellite” from the Golden Hours, and join us for (seriously) some of the best pop in Portland!!

End Of An Era: Malice Is Leaving Portland + Final Dates @ Sassy's

Well, sad news for Portland. Our most famous adult entertainer is moving to LA at the end of this month. I contacted Malice to see if she had any last dates here in Portland and she'll be at Sassy's Thursday-Saturday through the end of July. I imagine that last day, July 31, will be quite a scene over there.

Portland (& the 97214) will miss you. Check her out before she's gone.
