Tomorrow Night: The Mystery of Chess Boxing @ Hollywood Theater | Ghostface Killer

If you missed it last month, you get one more chance. Dan has the ONLY known 35mm print of this movie. Plus, you can grow your Wu Tang clan background knowledge for the upcoming trivial pursuit hip-hop edition.

From Dan Halsted/Grindhouse:
Tuesday night at 9:30 at the Hollywood Theatre, cheer on the fight against the Ghostface Killer!  The Grindhouse Film Festival presents an encore screening of THE MYSTERY OF CHESS BOXING.  This is the only known 35mm print of one of the greatest kung fu movies ever made.  Here's one more chance to see it before it's filed into the vault.

THE MYSTERY OF CHESS BOXING (1979) The original Ghostface Killer is on the loose!  A vicious villain with an unstoppable five element technique, Ghostface is killing off all his old rivals.  Meanwhile, a young student tries to learn kung fu and is taken under the wing of an old chess master.  The basics of chess prove to be the same as the basics of fighting, and eventually the heroes will have to fight Ghostface Killer, who verbally insults his opponents as he annihilates them.  A true classic, and obvious favorite of the Wu Tang Clan, directed by Joseph Kuo (SEVEN GRANDMASTERS)

25+ Portland First Thursday Events | May 2010

First Thursday @ Everett Station Lofts, Portland, OregonPortland's monthly First Thursday event is only two days away and it looks like we will have good weather (60 & sunny…really…). There are over 50 (probably 100) galleries having openings this month.

We have a very large list below thanks to Sequential Art Gallery (328 NW Broadway) & Rich Vail Mackin. They compile an email called the  "[h]IT LIST" of events every month. You can join it by emailing them @ sequentialart @ gmail dot com. We have reproduced much of it below with permission.

Are you on the Twitter? Follow @FirstThursday to see what people are posting about it. Use @firstthursday or the #firstthursday hashtag when tweeting about the event. We will retweet many. You can also follow Sequential art on twitter: @sequentialart

This month at Sequential Art Gallery
{328 NW Broadway #113}
Sequential Art Gallery's new show might be lacking in May flowers, but it does feature a lot of natural materials! Artist Brian Kappel works mainly in wood, either building small robots out of blocks or creating intricately inlaid large pieces of wall art. Much of his work utilizes vibrant stains and glazes instead of opaque paints, allowing the grain of his medium to show through and create rich textures within the art. The show will feature a number of these large format pieces, as well as some smaller works and design art, and opens during May's First Thursday art walk downtown.

Curated by Kaebel JK Hashitani and Merrick Monroe.

Save the Moustache: The Parlour Benefit Show! | All Ages

Posted by Mike Harper

The Parlour is one of those scant all ages venues here in Portland. Sticking to good beer, good wine, local artists, and good music for everyone to enjoy, they've been trying to keep it going for a while now. The three owners are artists, baristas, and musicians alike, working normal old day jobs so that they can help bring all-ages music to Portland at night. But the pockets of three young guys only go so deep, and it's starting to catch up with them!

From The Parlour:
The Parlour crew has been hanging on as tightly as we could since the very beginning, but recent unfortunate developments with the property have made it impossible for us to continue as what we are. It weighs very heavily in our minds to have to notify our patrons and acts of this drastic change, but we will be unable to keep our doors open after a short while, most likely the end of May, if not sooner.

We just might be able to save this, though!

This Thursday, come down to The Parlour to try to save southeast Portland's all ages venue! Read the rest of this entry »

Portland's Annual 'Cinco de Lebowski' @ Bagdad Theater | May 7

This Friday is the fifth annual Cinco de Lebowski festival. Sadly, unlike last year two years, there will not be a sanctioned March of the Lebowskis* from Laurelhurst Park to the Bagdad. They do have contests, music, and of course, the movie.

Related from Pipeline:

From Press Release:
big lebowskiCort and Fatboy present the 5th annual CINCO DE LEBOWSKI, a homegrown house party at the Bagdad Theater, held in celebration of The Dude. As Walter Sobchak might say, “MARK IT CINCO!”

I know many were worried that the Lebowski fun would disappear along with our corporate paychecks. But the Dude Abides, and so do we. However – lack of corporate conglomerates assuming considerable liability means that unlike the 2 previous years, there will be no free attendance via bathrobe, and no March of the Lebowskis*, either.

HOWEVER – the screening will be preceded by live gut-bucket blues music performed by The Troublemakers, and The Jesters, McMenamin's own Street Marching Band, will greet you at the door with fabulous, bathrobed funk.

Attendance is STILL Read the rest of this entry »
