This Weekend: Wordstock Book-to-Film Festival @ Bagdad, Kennedy School

The official Wordstock festival is still over five months away, but the the second Book-To-Film fest is this weekend. There's a lot of good films for adults and for families and all benefits go to the festival.

From Press Release:

Wordstock Book-to-Film Festival The Wordstock Book-to-Film Festival
April 30-May 2, 2010

That's right: It's back! Wordstock is pleased to present the second annual installment of our Book-to-Film series. Where last year's lineup was comprised of highly regarded films made by famous directors, we decided to go in a little different direction this year. The films we're showcasing this year fall more under the “cult classic” category. These are all movies that you've seen many times, but rarely on the big screen.

Well, now's your chance! Take a look at what's in store this year:

The Princess Bride (1987. Novel by William Goldman. Directed by Rob Reiner. )
The Outsiders (1983. Novel by S.E. Hinton. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola.)
Charlotte's Web (1973. Novel by E.B. White. Directed by Charles A. Nichols & Iwao Takamoto.)
High Fidelity (2000. Novel by Nick Hornby. Directed by Stephen Frears.)
Fight Club (1999. Novel by Chuck Palahniuk. Directed by David Fincher.)

This weekend-long festival of cult classics inspired by books is sponsored by McMenamins, and will be held at the following McMenamins theaters: Read the rest of this entry »

Just Another Music Monday: Soap Collectors

Posted by Mike Harper

What else says church more than stained glass, pulpit, steeple, and homebrewed beer?

The church show on Saturday featuring Leviticus Appleton, Spesus Christ, Adventures! With Might, Your Canvas and Soap Collectors was all that and more. If there ever was a reason for me to go back to church, that was it. A fine mix of house show, venue, and youth group, Saturday Mass at The Church of Spesus Christ was as redeeming as it was inebriating. With drinks, Apes Tapes, projector screen chat boxes and a full lineup of electro-ambient dance bands and folk, the night was as well rounded as a pious friar, less perfect than nun (I really can't resist a bad pun).

Soap Collectors rounded out the night with an endearing set of their soft electronic ballads. A touch of genuine lyricism, silky vocals and floating melodies make up this vital combo. Imagine Bjork, if she calmed down a little bit. And what might be the most random/awesome part about Soap Collectors (aside from awesome music): they actually sell soap. I'd recommend getting their latest EP and a bar of soap; you'd be cleaning up pretty nicely.

This Weekend: Midori joins the Oregon Symphony to perform the Sibelius Violin Concerto

From our partners at Oregon Symphony

Midori joins the Oregon Symphony to perform the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Three performance only: at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 24 and 25, and 8 p.m. Monday, Apr. 26.

Born in Osaka, Japan, Midori received her first violin at 3 years old, gave her first public performance at 7 and made her New York Philharmonic debut at age 11. At 21 she founded the philanthropic group Midori and Friends to help bring music to children in New York City. Today, she‘s as passionate about music education as performance.

Don't miss this rare chance to see the one-time child prodigy known the world over by her first name alone. Now a mature musician at the absolute peak of her powers, Midori takes on one of the most demanding works ever written: the Sibelius Violin Concerto, a masterpiece that's been called "purely virtuosic."

THE CONCERT CONVERSATION, conducted one hour before each concert, will be presented by Music Director Carlos Kalmar and Robert McBride of All Classical FM. Enjoy Concert Conversations at home, too.

Click here to see it online live at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, or watch the videos on demand any time afterward.
