Review & Pictures: Cirque du Soleil "Kooza" in Portland | Opens Tonight!
April 9, 2010 — PDXPIPELINEBy Stacy Day
The Cirque du Soleil big top of wonder and whimsy is back in town tonight with Kooza. And you don't want to miss it.
A visual paradox of a melancholy tale about The Innocent searching for his place in the world, the dazzling display of human acrobatics — stretching like taffy and twisting like pretzels — is only matched by the wit and comedy of the clowns and strong support of tight musical talent, detailed costumery + minimally effective set design.
Because you should see it for yourself, we will only share a few highlights (and iPhotos snapped before we were busted) and leave the comments section for you to compare notes:
* A Bill Murray look-alike clown.
* Dare devils that will make you squirm on a spinning wheel of death. (Yeah, we had to cover our eyes…a few times.)
* A live, diverse musical score including a harder, heavy metal-influenced song.
* Tango on a unicycle!?! Look out Portland tall bikes… This guy's got game! (And a flower for a nipple.)
* Free cocktail shrimp, goat cheese roasted tomato brushetta, popcorn and drinks. Oh wait, that's only when PDXpipeline is in the house.
* Clowns walking the tight rope of adult-only humor. With humping. And hip gyrations.
* Stilts + Catapult = ! ! ! ! !
So get lost in not taking yourself so seriously. For the cost of a night out at the bar plus dinner, you can feel out of shape, laugh your ass off and leave with your jaw ajar. And if you end up on stage, keep one eye on the clown and the other on your pockets.
