BRUTAL BEAUTY
DIRECTOR: CHIP MABRY / PORTLAND — ARTIST IN ATTENDANCE
US 2009

"Forget Drew Barrymore's recent foray into roller derby: Chip Mabry's BRUTAL BEAUTY gives an honest shot of girl-powered adrenaline in his documentary on Portland's own Rose City Rollers. Stakes are raised when their all-star team goes on the road to face off against Bay Area and Denver opponents. Without the contrived personalities or plotlines of WHIP IT, Mabry's tattooed and bruised chicks are entertainment enough, and with the help of Voodoo doughnuts to explain the derby rules, there's no way a Portlander won't feel a rousing sense of pride as they gear up for the Rollers' upcoming season."—Ali Rothschild, Willamette Week. (80 mins.)

The audience is invited to join Bitch Media, Portland's Rose City Rollers, and the Northwest Film Center for no host drinks and snacks after the screening at Momo's Bar (725 Southwest 10th Avenue). Read the rest of this entry »

Just Another Music Monday: Kelli Schaefer

Posted by Mike Harper

Kelli Schaefer, Portland, OregonKelli Schaefer is perhaps the queen example of a singer-songstress casting off acoustic guitar-forg'd manacles, hinging angel-sung poetry to a barreling wall of guitar that effuses like a layered orchestra of clouds lamenting their thunder. Between the enrapturing magnetism of Kelli's voice and the carefully drumsmithed beats of Jeremiah Hayden, you can't help but be absorbed into anthems like "Sister K", or disappear into the folds of "City Morgue."

Schaefer will be releasing "Black Dog/Home" on Amigo/Amiga April 9th, her third two-track album in the label's series of a/b side single releases.
