Portland's 27th Reel Music Film Festival | January 8 – February 7

Posted by Kimberly Gehl

This weekend the NW Film Center kicks off the 27th edition of its annual Reel Music Film Festival, an exquisite month-long showcase of some of the greatest “musical” films in existence.

Not to be confused with the popular “musicals” film genre we are all familiar with, the Reel Music Film Festival offers a diverse line-up of films whose common themes are the exploration of the history of a wide-variety of styles of music and types of instruments, the fascinating relationship between sound and image, and the influence of music on society and culture.

I was able to preview some of this weekend's line-up, and I have to say that all of them were a pleasure to watch. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, consider one of the following screenings: Read the rest of this entry »

Muddy Waters Is Open 24 Hours Until Monday + Weekend Party | January 8-10

I live in the Sunnyside neighborhood that includes Muddy Waters and read this blog post in the Portland Mercury about their possibly closing next week. I Muddy Waters fundraiser, portland, oregonstopped by early in the morning  and I saw they are having a big party this weekend (click picture for large size on Flickr). It looks good and you might want to check out the ending (or hopefully a new beginning) of Muddy Waters.

One of my favorite things at MW is the $1 coffee if you bring your own container. That's quite a deal and let's keep it alive.

Oh and…”Date a barista auction”… I suggest bidding on Aloe as she made me a quite fine hot chocolate and is also apparently a beautician according to a flyer by the door.

Portland / Global "No Pants Day" Max Ride | January 10

If you one of your New Year's resolutions was more public (semi-)nudity, you are in luck. The Global No Pants on Subway day is this Sunday. Not sure where they will be hopping on in NE, but North and SW are covered. Thanks to rule 1, part 2, there will likely be as many “photographers” & “bloggers” as participants. Thanks to rule #3…ummm…why would one bring baked ham and not eat it? Public (semi-)nudity is confusing.

No Pants Subway Max Ride info:

No Pants on Subway Max Day | PortlandAll are invited to participate in the 9th Annual No Pants! Subway (For us its the Max, Trolley and Bus) Ride. The event will take place at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 10th. Everything you need to know is in this post. Please read it carefully!

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION:

1) Willing to take pants off on public transportation or take them off before or just not wear them at all. If not, be willing to record someone doing it.
2) Able to keep a straight face about it
3) a loose rule. But I would highly recommend eating and bringing snacks. simply bringing a tupperware container full of honey baked ham and not eating it leads to making out with gross boys and telling people “the truth”. neither of those results in positive reactions from the crowd.

**THIS IS A PARTICIPATORY EVENT. DO NOT SHOW UP UNLESS YOU PLAN TO TAKE YOUR PANTS OFF OR HELP RECORD THE EVENT**

The Greek Cusina apparently closed this weekend. Perhaps the city's threats finally came to fruition. No news on whether the octopus is still there or will stay up…let's hope so or no Valentine's heart for us this year. BarFly's Review of Greek Cusina here.

Update: it appears the octopus will be taken down tomorrow. :(

Portland Video: CHERVONA ushers in 2010 – Alberta Public House

CHERVONA ushers in 2010
Alberta Public House
Portland, Oregon
Video by by Janaka Jayawardena

Description: An attempt to capture the live energy of Chervona, a Portland-based band that seems to defy categorization – Russian/gypsy/punkish/… all seem to fail at describing the foot stomping experience. I cut through two hours of footage to pull together about 6 minutes that hopefully gives you a sense of what the music and performance is like.
