Tomorrow: Hot Rocks: Oregon's Volcanic Past…and Future! @ Mission Theater | January 26

This photo below is from Mt Tabor Park (“Portland Concerts in the Park” series) in 2007.

From Portland Parks: Portland's Mt Tabor, a volcanic cinder cone, was named by Plympton Kelly, son of Oregon City pioneer resident Clinton Kelly, after Mt Tabor in Israel, six miles east of Nazareth.

Tomorrow night you can learn about Oregon's volcanic activity while drinking beer with friends of OMSI.

From OMSI Science Pub:

Portland Concerts in the Park - Mt TaborHot Rocks: Oregon's Volcanic Past…and Future!

The effect of volcanic activity on Oregon's landscape is obvious — from the impressive snow-capped peaks of Mt. Hood and Three Sisters to the dramatic testimony at Crater Lake to the rich soil of the Willamette Valley. But how do Oregon's volcanoes work and how do they compare to other volcanoes around the world?

What does evidence of previous eruptions tell us about what may happen in our future? Join the discussion and see demonstrations that show how volcanoes have such an impact on the land around us.

Fertile Ground Creative Festival 2010 | January 22nd – February 2nd

Posted by Kimberly Gehl

This Friday marks the start of the 2nd annual Fertile Ground Creative Festival, a 10 day, city-wide celebration of new local works! Prepare to be delighted by this year's line-up of over 50 projects and a dozen world premieres, spanning across a variety of genres and being presented by a very diverse group of talented (and hardworking!) Portland artists and organizations.

The festival was launched last year by the Portland Area Theatre Alliance (PATA) to promote the creation and development of new works, and to demonstrate that the 'City of Roses' “…truly is fertile ground for creativity, innovation and daring acts of performance”.

Fertile Ground differentiates itself from other “new works” art festivals by featuring projects that are right on the cusp of creation. This year's collection of projects include: Read the rest of this entry »

Also, from Patrick Coleman @ the Mercury (Dining for Haiti):

If you're dining out this weekend, look for area restaurateurs who will be donating a portion of their proceeds to aid the recovery efforts in Haiti. Today we received word of two such benefits.

The Economics of Stripping & Raunchy Ride @ Reed College | January 23

Gotta hand it to Reed. They do keep it interesting over there. I like the “optional field trip” after where you should bring dollar bills….hmmm.

Related from PDX Pipeline:

From Facebook Event info:
Reed College afternoon, Portland, OregonPart of Reed's Paideia week of classes.

A former stripper, an economics student, and an IRS-certified tax preparer talk about stripping from the most-important and often-ignored angle: moolah.

Learn about the incredibly bizarre money structures in strip clubs, the 101 on how much money a g-string is worth versus a thong, why hairy armpits can mean more cash, why strippers do and don't unionize, and why strippers can get a tax deduction for boob jobs.

Covers legal and less legal adult markets, and legislation's effect on vice markets.

This will be held on Reeds Campus in ETC 205. (That's near the SE corner of campus, very close to SE Woodstock.)

Saturday, January 23, 2010
3:00pm – 8:00pm

Note: All discussion is about economics NOT about ethics. Save your feminist theory discussions for some other time.

Optional field trip by bike or TriMet afterwards. Bring 1$ bills for the field trip.
