Portland Bowling Survey: Hollywood Bowl vs Powell Lanes

Portland Bowling Survey

We did a quick little survey on twitter the other evening to find out where people enjoy bowling more, Powell Lanes or Hollywood Bowl. Hollywood Bowl won by a landslide (and I think Pink Floyd played the one a bit south of here).

You can also add your opinion on local bowling as well.

Free music ish… This mix from Portland's own DJ Stray. You can see him around town rocking various parties, but this is his ode to all the tunes from the 80's he listened to while slow dancing/freak dancing girls in middle school — DJ Stray ‘Back to the Future' – www.soundcloud.com/djstray

Awesome Ish… 2 of my goals for the New Year were to give away a car at Massive and to have more open bar parties in Portland. Thanks to the support from a few local businesses this is happening! Open bar info to come later, but this Saturday night at Massive at the Crown Room we begin the free raffle to win a Toyota Rav4 for a free 1-year lease! If you've been to Massive you know about the madness, if you haven't, I suggest you come check out this dance party/fashion show and get in for FREE before 10pm by saying ‘LifeisaParty' at the door!

Life is a party, everyone is just waiting to be invited.

Grow A Mustache – Help Kids – Party | January 28

Tonight begins the annual Mustaches For Kids growing season which culminates in the 'Stache Bash in February. If you want to be involved, you'll have to shave off your current Shache and Bishops will do it for free.

From Mustaches For Kids:

Portland, Oregon Grows Sweet ‘Staches for Charity with Mustaches For Kids

The Portland chapter of Mustaches for Kids (M4K PDX) is kicking off its third annual Growing Season on January 28th with a Meet n Greet at 7pm at Red Flag (344 NE 28th Ave). If you have what it takes to grow a mustache for charity — and compete for the title of Portland's Sweetest ‘Stache — show up at Red Flag ready to sign up for a good cause!

Thanks to the good people at Bishops Barbershop, M4K participants who attend the Meet n Greet will receive a coupon for a free professional hot shave at the Bishops location of their choice. What better way for Growers to kick off the Growing Season and shave their faces clean before cultivating their ‘staches?!

The Oregon Symphony wants YOU! Join us for "Join the Audience." Jan 25 to Feb. 1

From our partners at the Oregon Symphony:

The Oregon Symphony wants YOU! Join us for "Join the Audience." Jan 25 to Feb. 1

For one week only, all remaining concert series seats are on sale for $20 or $40 — and an Oregon Symphony experience is more affordable than ever.

Maybe you've thought about giving an Oregon Symphony concert a try, but so far you've never actually taken the plunge because either …

A) You suspected good seats would be just too expensive, or
B) You couldn't get someone to join you, or
C) You aren't a huge fan of classical music.

Not to worry: At these prices, you really can't afford not to discover for yourself what so many fellow PDXers already know — that the best way to experience great music — any great music — is live!

Good seats: Just $20. Even better ones: Just $40. At these prices, your friends will want to come along, too. And if classical music just isn't your thing … hey, we've got some great Pops concerts on sale, too, from Motown's Greatest Hits to the music of the Fabulous Forties.

You won't find a better time — or a better price — to catch the Oregon Symphony live. So let's get started: Visit us at www.orsymphony.org/jointheaudience. Or stop by our ticket office at 923 SW Washington St. Or call us, 503-228-1353.

Just don't put it off any longer, because a deal this good won't stick around for long. Pick up your tickets today.

We've been waiting for you.

*Price depends on seat location. These are substantial savings over regular ticket prices.

Bowerbirds & Julie Doiron @ Mississippi Studios | January 26

Posted by Mike Harper

A Bower from the January Rain

Bowerbirds Laying your head down on a pillow of cool grass with the warm wind tickling your ears might be the cheesiest and most Thoreauesque way to describe North Carolina's Bowerbirds — but it fits. The calm wave of Beth Tacular's accordion meshing with the water droplet nylon plink of Phil Moore's guitar soothes the ear like a record turning the room into a field of folk. Warm vocals brimming with melancholy wrap around sincere lyrics that can hush a harmony into a teardrop smile.

Bowerbirds newest release Upper Air (released on Dead Oceans) follows in the calm footsteps of Hymns for a Dark Horse but does not waver in a well-rounded improvement. Upper Air breathes like an open lung on the first day of Spring, clear and vibrant a harp made of grass blades and 1,000 year old trees.

Twelve dollars and a visit to Mississippi Studios gets you a live look at this trio, along with the help of Canada's Julia Doiron (myspace.com/juliedoiron)
