Fothing Interviews | David Saffert

By Meagan Kate

For my fifth interview with the cast and writers of Fothing, I was given the chance to sit down with David Saffert, who plays the love interest of Addison in last season's Fall of the House.

An actor who has been a part of Action/Adventure for less than a year, David has taken on the task of developing Fothing character Ben – based on Ben Stoddard, Creator/Director/Writer of  the web series. Below, we talk David's love of Kevin Crooks, the real Ben Stoddard and Miranda King vs. their characters on the show, and Wednesday night's drinking fest at The Woods.

This is the least painful thumbnail Vimeo has given us. Maybe it realizes we're coming to an end and is choosing to give me a break.

After the drinking party [and karaoke] this Wednesday night at The Woods — you can head to the show's website [www.fothingtv.com] to watch the first five episodes (again!) and get your Fothing fix. The next new episode party will be Wednesday, November 25th at The Woods with the show premiering on the website Thanksgiving morning!

There was quite the controversy or rather misdirection last year about whether Santacon was in downtown or Hillsboro. Regardless of what happened, Antion definitely took place in North Portland. Description from Squid Vicious:

It started out slow but that could of been because everyone was arriving by max. Last years downtown Santacon had a buzz about it, and it was a crazy buzz. This years NorthPDX Santacon had some very familliar faces along with a friend feel to it. The crowd was a couple hundred deep and everyone liked being in a different part Portland.

2nd Annual Northwest Eggnog Competition: Bacon + Eggnog = Happy Holidays | November 18

This Wednesday brings the second annual Northwest Eggnog Competition to Portland. It's free and looks like a great time.

Here is some official information (from Oregonlive):
Beginning at 6 p.m., patrons will sample concoctions made by bartenders from 23Hoyt, Besaw's Cafe, Jo Bar & Rotisserie, Muu-Muu's and a handful of others.

Those in attendance, plus judges from local distilleries, will cast their votes, and the winning recipe will appear on Elephants' Web site, www.elephantsdeli.com.

And here's the smack-talk information from Pipeline friend and Uptown Billiards' bartender Jen Winklepleck:

Yours truly is representing Uptown Billiards in a bartending throwdown to find out who's eggnog reigns supreme! Come watch me go head to head with the likes of Saucebox, Teardrop, and other big hitters, as we woo and amaze guest judges and of course, you, the oh-so-incredible public, with our imaginative and tasty eggnog recipes.

Mine is going to BLOW YOUR MIND!!! (One word: BACON…that do anything for ya?)

It will be held at Elephant's Deli on NW 22nd Ave this coming Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 7-9pm. It's open to the public, so if you're ready to kick off your holiday season with the finest of cholesterol-filled adult beverages, then by all means get your asses down there!

If anything…come give me some kudos…I wanna annihilate these b*****!
Happy Holidays from your favorite local bartending goddess.

"Only Known 35mm Print Of Fist Of The White Lotus @ Hollywood Theater | November 17

I've scoured the interwebs to see what you should do Tuesday evening and have found it. First, go get some free food (“appetizers and refreshments”) at the mural unveiling @ Farm Cafe between five and seven. Then, head to to Hollywood Theater at 9:45 to check out one of the baddest Kung Fu films ever made. (More good stuff this week on our Portland events list here)

From Grindhouse Film:
Due to the popularity of the OLD SCHOOL KUNG FU MASTERS film series, an additional movie has been added!  This Tuesday at 9:45 at The Hollywood Theatre, The Grindhouse Film Festival presents the only known 35mm print of the amazing classic FIST OF THE WHITE LOTUS.

FIST OF THE WHITE LOTUS (1980) Gordon Liu is out to avenge the destruction of the Shaolin Temple!  But he's up against an incarnation of the greatest villain in martial arts movie history: the unstoppable white eyebrowed Pai Mei (Gordon Liu played another incarnation of Pai Mei in KILL BILL VOL. 2)  Lo Lieh plays the villain here, and he's at his trash-talking, beard-stroking, kung fu annihilating best.  He'll even fight while he's naked. But watch out for his kung fu crotch!

The opening credit sequence alone is worth the price of admission, and the fight scenes are choreographed by kung fu master Lau Kar Leung (director of 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN).  Don't miss this.

Back Fence PDX: Seven Stories based on the theme Get Me Outta Here | November 19

Posted by Sasha Burchuk

Its now cold, rainy, and getting dark at four pm. Winter is upon us, and Ray Davies singing about tea and a toasted butter currant bun/meant to compensate for lack of sun is beginning to seem very apropos. It's the time of the season for drafting a survival plan for how to weather the next six months of steady rain. I plan on going to as many readings as possible, even if they are "cold" readings, like this one*.

While there won't be tea or butter-currant buns — sorry — there will be free cupcakes and a fine line-up of folks from all walks of life to tell you their true stories; eight-minutes-and-under novellas — among them, recent Literary Death Match winner and author of Our Beloved 26th Riley Michael Parker; political blogger and future senator (we hope) Karol Collymore; and former corrections officer Rory Miller. Each guest will present you with an unscripted story that has never been iterated before any other theater audience, based on this month's theme of Get Me Outta Here.

www.backfencepdx.com
November 19, at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan).
Bar/food at 6 pm / Show at 7:30
Tickets $10 online; $12 at the door

* These are live stories without notes & memorization. “Cold readings” here refers to ones that are being performed with little or no preparation, i.e., “improv.”

Pink Noise: The Old Sound of The New New Wave

Posted by Mike Harper

Amidst our 80's born generation dripping with Care Bear nostalgia, bright dancing high tops, and mythological creature themed shirts much much too small, there are but a few characters out there as steeped in the flagrant neon of 25 years ago as Pink Noise.

If you ever had a hard time finding an animal print shirt, jacket, pair of pants or earring (for whatever reason you were looking), blame these three guys – they collectively put Cruella Deville and Montgomery Burns to shame. (Except they're not evil and they like dancing, not killing animals).

Behind a wall of pure synthesizers, fog machines and the deep Dave Gahanesque Read the rest of this entry »
