Literary Death Match @ Blue Monk | November 12

Posted by Sasha Burchuk

Literary Death Match, Thursday, November 12 at the Blue Monk Basement Lounge — 3341 SE Belmont St. Doors at 7:30, Show at 8:00 PM. Tickets $10 at the door or $8 pre-order.

Little did most of you know that our dreary dreamy rainy burg is actually a haven for aspiring (and aspired) writers who give readings with some frequency that no one ever seems to hear about because for some reason they're rarely advertised in the weeklies. I guess because most folks would rather just go see a movie. Or read to themselves. Or be on facebook. And who can blame them if that's what they'd rather do? But I'm here to say that readings are usually a wonderful experience because they allow us to bond in a humanly way that we have enjoyed bonding in since our race discovered campfire. And they're often very excellent opportunities to be entertained by some very kooky people, while exercising your own sophistication.

This Thursday's Literary Death Match, a fundraiser for Opium Magazine (a NY-based lit mag) should be splendid, with short — i.e., under eight minutes — readings by Jeff Hardison (representing Back Fence), Riley Michael Parker, author of Our Beloved 26th, Kerry Cohen (Loose Gin) and Arthur Bradford, author of Dog Walker. The panel of judges will include OPB's poet in residence, Scott Poole, NY Times best-selling author Chelsea Cain (Evil at Heart), and lo and behold — Zia McCabe from the Dandy Warhols.

Joe Krown Trio: New Orleans Jazz @ Goodfoot | November 14 |

From our partners at Goodfoot Lounge

Goodfoot Lounge: JOE KROWN, RUSSELL BATISTE, WALTER "WOLFMAN" WASHINGTON @ 9:00pm

Legends Converge in New Orleans based Joe Krown Trio featuring Walter Wolfman Washington and Russell Batiste

Skimming the bios of New Orlean's Joe Krown Trio is a trip down a virtual Who‘s Who of music giants. Among the collective lists of achievements and awards of band members are peppered the names of those they've played with; Ray Charles, Little Richard, David Batiste and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown are only a few of the legends with whom Joe Krown Trio has shared the musical stage.

The illustrious players comprising Joe Krown Trio give a solid nod to predecessors, but consistantly fuse history with their own unique, funky, soul driven, R&B drenched jam that jumps off the stage like a living history lesson.

Hammond B-3 guru and bandleader Joe Krown spent fifteen years as Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown's sideman. An award winning player, Krown has performed around the world, sharing the stage with icons like Mavis Staples, Charlie Musselwhite and the North Mississippi Allstars. Krown toured as a support act for Eric Clapton and numerous best selling records feature his name and astounding organ prowess.

For nearly 30 years,Walter “Wolfman” Washington has played with his band, The Roadmasters, touring every major music festival in the US and in Europe. As a teenager, Washington played guitar with Lee Dorsey who was touring in support of his smash hits, “Ride Your Pony” and “Working in a Coalmine.” In the mid 80's, Washington started recording and releasing music with Rounder Records. Ever an innovator, Washington is known for his growling vocals and stunning guitar work and is a respected, revered and internationally known performer.

As a member of one of N'awlins legendary musical families, Russell Batiste Jr. knows his way around a sound stage. He's played multiple instruments, and has been at the drum kit since the age of four. One of Russell's earliest memories is sitting on Jackie Wilson's knee listening to him sing “Lonely Teardrops”at a jam session hosted by his dad, David Batiste. Russell joined the Funky Meters in 1989. For five years, Batiste was the drummer for Vidal Blue featuring bassist Oteal Burbridge (Allman Brothers) and Page McConnell (Phish). Batiste recorded with Mike Gordon (Phish) and Eric Krasno from Soulive. Russell has also performed with Harry Connick Jr., Champion Jack DuPree, Robbie Robertson, and Maceo Parker.

Phyllis Hartnoll's Final Lesson

This weekend, The Portland Actors Conservatory serves as home to three short plays written, directed and performed by its graduates.

With the creative process serving as the common thread between each piece, they are uniquely emotional.

The first play, titled Phyllis Hartnoll's Final Lesson, introduces the audience to a professor of theater, on her death bed. Though her attempts to give a final lecture fail,  she is given the chance to end things on her terms, with a voice she had lost. Cate Oarrsion was graceful as Phyllis, and her performance made my heart ache.

Our second piece (and most over-the-top), Donnerstrasse, follows the famous Grimm Brothers in their writing process as they attempt to create a pop song; only to find out they may be stepping on some toes. Important toes. Big toes.In finding this out, the audience experiences the uncomfortable breaking of the wall between reality and the stage – which was appreciated and quite refreshing.  This piece left everyone laughing and Tom Mounsey and Mark Merritt as the brothers had a wonderfuly playful chemistry. I will also add that their German accents made the audience swoon (I was not one of them. The swooners. I am a professional). Read the rest of this entry »

Fothing Interviews | Kevin Crooks

By Meagan Kate

This is our fourth interview with cast members and writers of the popular stage show Fall of the House, who double as actors and writers for the web TV series, Fothing.

This week, I met with Kevin Crooks who plays the eccentric pot dealer, Addison, in Fall of the House – as well as the self-obsessed, failed pot dealer Kevin Crooks in Fothing. Unlike Tamara, Aubrey and Devon (the subjects of the previous interviews I've done – links below), Kevin is not an actor by trade but rather by happy accident.

Though Vimeo did not choose as awkward a thumbnail as it did for the other interviews, our evening meeting made the picture quality a bit less than stellar. Sure you can hear some martini shakers and mumbling of other patrons, but you can see busy Belmont in the background and the fact that the interview went on in the middle of a busy bar, around people who didn't seem to notice made it very “Portland.”

If you don't make it to the premiere party [and subsequent karaoke] Wednesday night — you can catch the episode online starting Thursday morning. If you head to their website [www.fothingtv.com] right now you can catch up on the last four episodes, and find lots of information about the cast!
