Tuesday Events in Portland: October 27 | Grindhouse, Trail Blazers, YPOP & PNCA Party

It's going to rain today…you might as well go inside an enjoy an event. Some choices:

From Grindhouse:
This Tuesday at 9:45 at the Hollywood Theatre, it's the third (and craziest) film in the Old School Kung Fu Masters series: FATAL FLYING GUILLOTINE.

FATAL FLYING GUILLOTINE (1977) Following the Shaw Brothers' FLYING GUILLOTINE film, and Jimmy Wang Yu's classic MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE, came this lower budget batshit-crazy production.  A young student is out for revenge for his mother's death, while a group of Shaolin monks search for a kung fu book.  All roads lead to an old evil master who fights with dual motorized flying guillotines, beheading anyone who challenges him.  This movie seems to have been written in some sort of drug fueled haze, and gets crazier by the minute.  Protect your neck!

35mm martial arts mayhem.  Advance tickets and more information on the website: www.grindhousefilmfest.com

Portland Trail Blazers Season Opener Tonight | Watch Games in PDX

Portland Trail Blazers rally in Pioneer Square

The Trail Blazers 40th season tips off Tuesday, picking up where we left off with an Opening Night matchup vs. Houston, the return of a talented young roster, the addition of key veterans and the support of the league's best fans.

–Trail Blazers email

The Trail Blazers are finally back in action and with the improved roster, a Western Conference Finals contender this year. The game starts at 7 and is on KGW NewsChannel 8 and streamed on the web for $3.99. As you know, you shouldn't do illegal things, but it will likely also be streamed free right here.

If you don't feel like watching at home, here are a couple of SouthEast options from us and many more from the twitter.

We also did this poll last season: Where to Watch the Portland Trail Blazers Games

Pipeline Pick: Tanker Bar, 4825 SE Hawthorne

Tuesday Happy Hour info: 3-8pm, $2.50 well, $3 – $3.50 micros (15 handles) ladies night = $1 off all drinks 8Pm til close.

I like to go to the Tanker and watch games. I went to see the historic Vikings vs Green Bay Packers MNF game recently with this superfan and had a great time. They have three or four Ninkasi beers on tap and at $3 until 8PM, you should get there early.

From Barfly: In the heart of the Barmuda triangle lies the capsized hull of the Tanker. The sea-worthy attention to detail shows freshly swapped decks and a total lack of barnacles. While you won't mourn for the lost souls of lonely sailors, you will enjoy friendly service, tasty grinders, and possibly the most reliable WiFi in all of Portland. More info at barfly…

Pipeline Family Pick: Blitz (SouthEast) Ladd, 2233 SE 11th Ave

Tuesday Happy Hour info from Barfly: $2.50+ Pints, $3.50 wells, $5 win 4-7pm, 10pm-midnight

Blitz allows minors until 9, so you can enjoy the first half (or more) with the kids before putting them to bed and watching from home.

From Barfly: Utterly massive southeast sister of Blitz Bar in the Pearl. Sidewalk seating for smokers, and 220z beers are available to go. Open 11am-Close Monday-Saturday and 8:30-Close Sundays. Kids allowed until 9:00pm. 15x HD TVs, 2x shuffleboard, 3x pool, 1x Golden Tee, 1x Pinball, 3x Ping Pong, Photobooth, 1x Air Hockey, and misc board games. More info at Barfly.

Last Thursday: Vinyl Killers @ Goodfoot | Huge Art Show

Once again, the Goodfoot Lounge is pulling together a fantastic Last Thursday show with a ton of artists. If you haven't seen the Vinyl Killers show before, it is one of the top attended shows they have. Add the Monkeytek DJ and Ryan Organ of Various and you most likely have the top Last Thursday opening of the week.

Are you on the twitter? Follow the @lastthursday account for Last Thursday updates plus use the #lastthursday tag when tweeting from the events.

From Goodfoot Lounge:
Goodfoot Vinyl KillersThe often imitated, never duplicated, OG vinyl art show, Vinyl Killers returns this October for another round of rescuing long forgotten records from the world's landfills. This year there have been at least 6 other vinyl shows in North America alone and interest in the artform is at an all time high. After six annual shows and several touring exhibits Vinyl Killers remains committed to staying open call, independent, D-I-Y, and free of corporate sponsorship.

Since it's inception in 2003 Vinyl Killers has showcased well over 1000 records painted by artists from around the world. A quick glance at the VK website shows both the genres global influence and the absolutely amazing things that are being done with paint and old records. Media recognition for this innovative show includes The Art Of Rebellion 2 and Stencil Nation, and features in numerous international street art magazines and blogs. In 2005 Klutch, the founder and curator of VK, had the room that he decorated with painted records for San Francisco's Hotel Des Arts featured in Time magazine.

Vinyl Killers 7 opens on October 29th in Portland, Oregon at The Goodfoot. The Goodfoot is located at 2845 SE Stark St. and is open daily from 5 PM to 2:30 AM.

There will also be vinyl only selections from dj's monkeytek, ryan organ and samizdat during the opening artist.

2009 Portland Zombie Walk & Thriller Dance | Pictures + Video

Portland Zombie Walk 2009, Thriller Dance
Video by generalsify

Description: At the end of the Portland Zombie Walk 2009, a sudden Thriller Dance took place and while it was incredible watching a couple hundred zombied out dancers all performing at the same time, the best part was hearing the cheers from the crowd seeing the faces of all the people who just happened to stumble unknowingly upon this event. :)

If you have videos or pictures from Saturday's zombie fun, post them in the comments.

Gossip @ Wonder Ballroom | Saturday October 24th

Posted by Meagan Kate

Portland based Gossip brings 'Music for Men' home

image001A front woman with gutting vocals, a drummer driving incredible beats, a brilliant guitarist and lyrics that have inspired; Gossip has changed the face of popular music while refusing to compromise.

Driven by the eccentric Beth Ditto, with drummer Hannah Blilie and guitarist Nathan 'Brace' Pain, the band has focused on music which moves and challenges its audience – by addressing social issues and personal struggles — showing no signs of fear in their exposure.

Olympia, Washington is the band's birthplace, though they are currently Portland-based (queue Googling). In 2007, the band's powerful album 'Standing in the Way of Control' earned them huge success through US radio and television stations. Their first major label studio album 'Music for Men' has them on their current tour – hitting Portland Saturday night.

Produced by legendary hip-hop mogul Rick Rubin, 'Music for Men' has given fans more disco-pop-punk-love songs than they could ever hope for. From the heartbroken 'Love Long Distance' to one of my favorites, 'Men in Love' (men in love … with each other … hey!)  – the band continues to produce their brand of genre-bending dance anthems.

Gossip's live show is legendary. Beth's outlandish costumes and intensity surprises first-timers and the band's connection to the fans keeps them coming back. Saturday night, the band comes home to Portland with one night at the Wonder Ballroom. Tickets are still available, and with continued world fame, the band's future shows promise to sell out far sooner.  Still skeptical? Not sure you want to drop the $20? Check out the band's MySpace - and I promise you won't be able to resist. I know I'll be there.

Beth Ditto — can I be your best friend!?

Bringing back the 'stache! | The Parlour reopens 10/23

Posted by Mike Harper

parlourStashed away near the heart of southeast,  rests a place somewhere between a steam punk lounge and a mustachioed venue. Formerly Chaos Parlor (Chaos Cafe's musical Siamese twin, connected at the kitchen), The Parlour will reopen this weekend. With a grand selection of beer from Full Sail and other local breweries bottled and on tap, as well as local bloom kombucha, mustache wax, local art and an array of vegan and vegetarian fare, The Parlour has grown back with high hopes and a whole new 'stache to offer.

Friday night features local indie and folk bands such as the shoegazy pop of Particles & Waves, the melodic timbre of Leaves Russell, and the eloquent folk of Chris Boone & The Bruce Lees.

This Saturday will include a night of madness and experiment with Power Circus featuring Mirrormilk, Cult of Zir featuring Miss Mutation, Sleeping With The Earth, At the Head of the Woods, and Eyerish Heather Collins. Read the rest of this entry »
