Portland's Late Night Halloween Party: Thriller @ 2410

This is PROBABLY the latest night Halloween party in Portland. The others end at 2:30 or earlier while this one ends at 4PM and the price is pretty good. Also, most interesting party flyer I have seen so far. If you don't get seizures looking at it, you can probably figure out the details. I saw $150 costume contest prize in there somewhere (doesn't seem to animate for all browsers).

THRILLER! 2410
OCTOBER 31st!!

VOODEUX(Mothership, Dirtybird)

http://www.mothershipmusic.com/paranormal

Described as ‘Halloween on wax' Voodeux is the human manifestation of creepy house and techno. James Watts (AKA KiloWatts) and Tanner Ross's collaborative black magic goes back six years when they met online at a website devoted to music synths and production and have been collaborating ever since.

Despite the 300 miles that separate the two producers, modern technology keeps the pair in perfect lockstep. "We pass back and forth project files," says Ross. "He adds to my idea and I add to his idea and the track is done" . This audio clairvoyance is the perfect example of the unconventional approach of Voodeux, and draws on genuine elements of mystery and intrigue evident in their production process. Like a ghost that only shows up once the photo develops there is a presence on their production that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Voodeux project's public metamorphosis began with The Curse EP, which came out last year on Mothership. Off the back of the success of this EP, label honcho Claude VonStroke suggested an album along the same spooky theme.

Referring to the name of the project Tanner explains: ‘At the time I was watching this crazy ass video of Screaming Jay Hawkins doing "I Put A Spell On You" and he was dressed up in this wild Voodoo type costume and I thought… "THATS IT! VOODOO"

Previously, Tanner Ross, a music synthesis major at esteemed music school Berklee in Boston, had met Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke at WMC 06 and gone on to remix monster classic ‘Who's Afraid Of Detroit' on dirtybird. ‘Claude VonStroke showed me the light!' he jokes, but clearly a reciprocal admiration in each others work paved the way for further alliance. Tanner Ross is also known for his and KiloWatts remix of Lovely Day on OM Records and the hugely popular Lower Allston EP (under his Marcel Wave moniker) on Freerange. He is a self -confessed vintage horror film aficionado.

Jamie Watts (AKA KiloWatts) is an accomplished producer with a formidable discography spanning labels like Artificial Music Machine, Harmonious Discord, Thoughtless
Music and his own outlet KilloWatts Music. He has produced five full albums to date, embodying several different projects and styles.

His work embraces the bulk of electronic genres, including breaks, IDM, techno, and downtempo. Full of visionary dimensions, he fuses together a dexterous knowledge of sound synthesis, deep emotional articulation, and solid melodic intuition. His fluency in piano is evident throughout his work, as is his penchant for jazzy riffs, intelligent structure, wistful melodies, and an often cheeky take on the current state and history of electronic music as a whole.

The result of this potent concoction of the pair's influences and technical wizardry is a hypnotic spell over the senses shrouded in suspense and the unexpected. Resonate with a modern day soundtrack to a slasher movie, Voodeux are about to creep under your skin with a chilling tale of eerie house and minimal techno that will haunt you long after you've left the club.

Ron Jeremy @ Club Sesso: October 8 & 9

Trailer- The Legend of Ron Jeremy

When we posted about Club Sesso's First Thursday art opening last week, many people asked if Ron would be there. He was not, but we were just informed that Ron Jeremy is coming to town tomorrow to visit his club and well…do what Ron does best…which I believe that is stand-up comedy*. Anyway, if you want to meet him, I've heard you can get your pic taken with the Hedgehog.

From Club Sesso:

He is excited to return to the club and have an opportunity to spend a couple of days hanging out with everyone.

To say Ron is excited about having his name on Club Sesso is an understatement. We talk several times per month and his first question is always, “How is the club doing”. Ron Jeremy's Club Sesso is his crown jewel.

If you want to read more about the NSFW and 21+ details, you can check out Sesso's calender.

* I hope you know that stand up is not what Ron Jeremy does best. There will be no stand-up comedy. Do not go looking for stand up tomorrow and Friday at Sesso…

Review: Ragtime @ Portland Center Stage

By Nathalie Weinstein

Ragtime @ Portland Center StageThe musical is a strange beast. Though they are often based on serious topics such as the French Revolution (Les Miserable), racial prejudice (Showboat) or the second World War (The Sound of Music), that doesn't stop musical producers from creating Easter-egg-colored sets, over-the-top costumes and including more jazz hands in the choreography than a production of Fosse. The contrast between the singing and dancing and the Nazis, guns and bigots can sometimes be overwhelming to your average theater-goer.

But Portland Center Stage's Ragtime is not your normal musical production. Forgoing the traditional inclination to create a period set in favor of a stark, almost Brechtain stage with what look like large metal doors to divide the scenes, the emphasis is on the story and the music rather than the spectacle. As PCS PR and publications manager Trisha Mead told me, it's a musical for people that don't like musicals. And boy, can this cast sing.

Based on the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, Ragtime tells the story of Read the rest of this entry »
