PCPA presents Company | Oct. 1- Nov. 8 + Win Tickets

(Win a pair of tickets to Company! Info at end of the post)

Company @ Jane, Portland

I didn't have time to research Company before I saw it last Thursday so I was surprised that it was so apropos to my life. It's about a 35 year old bachelor named Bobby (Robert-darling, Bobby-baby) and the different relationships he has with his married friends. Some want to find him that special someone, some want to scare him out of getting into a serious relationship, some just want him around so they don't have to be alone with their significant other. Man, I can relate and I know there are plenty of Portland bachelors and bachelorettes out there going through the same scenario. I recently attended a family wedding and got an earful of "So, are you seeing anyone special?" and "Let me introduce you to so-and-so". Not to mention the plentiful advice (or just venting) that I get from my married friends.

The amazing cast of Portland theater veterans did a great job with the sometimes challenging Sondheim score. I thought for sure Kelly Stewart (Amy) was going to Read the rest of this entry »

Posted by Meagan Kate

Live art. Free drinks. Cheap clothes. Green space.

Picture 217

Local aerosol artist Rai Villanueva (mentioned here last month) will be featured at tonight's First Thursday event at seven planet. Rai will begin working on a 7'x7' piece (one of the largest she's worked on) at 7pm; the finished piece (whatever it may be) will be available for auction as soon as it is complete.

seven planet, a green general store, allows its customers to shop in seven categories (get it? seven. ahem.) both online and in the locations here in Portland and in Idaho. Apparel, energy, food, health, household, shelter & travel are the core of seven planet's purpose.

ACLU's Uncensored Celebration With Storm Large & More | October 1 @ Holocene

Posted by Kristen Imes

The last week of September marks the American Library Association is the 27th year celebratingACLU's Uncensored Celebration With Storm Large & More | October 1 @ Holocene Banned Books Week – a campaign that they designed to raise awareness of freedom of speech through celebrating challenged books and the value of free expression.  Have you ever even looked at the list of Banned Books? It's not only shocking, but also ridiculous (The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Color Purple, Ulysses, Beloved, The Lord of the Flies, and 1984 are all in the top 10 “Banned or Challenged Classics“). Just think of your high school lit class without them…

In honor of Banned Books Week, the American Civil Liberties Union will be holding a Speech Extravaganza tonight, October 1st at Holocene. From 7:30-9:30 p.m., Portland's musical darling, Storm Large, will host Read the rest of this entry »

First Thursday @ Floating World Comics: New Mutants Book Signing & Art Exhibit

Posted by Kristen Imes

So who are the New Mutants and why should you be interested? Long story short, “they were adolescents- kids- too young to be X-Men, but old enough to start the training that would allow them to fully understand and harness their profound mutant powers. Professor X brought them together to become the first New Mutants team.

Over time… they learned to become more powerful mutants together” Sounds a little cheesy, I'll give it that, especially when the main characters have names like Karma and Moonstar they sound more like hippies than super heros but then again, who am I to judge?

But this event really isn't just about New Mutants, it's also about its Portland-based creator, Zachary Baldus (who also draws graphics for Baker Skateboards, and has worked for MTV, Time, New York Times, Wall St. Journal, Penthouse, Mad Magazine, Golf Digest, The Criterion Collection, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Scholastic, Knopf Books, Puffin Books, etc.).

This October 1st Thursday, Zachary will be at Floating World Comics to celebrate the release of New Mutants #5, with an exhibit of original artwork and a book signing. Read the rest of this entry »
