Posted by Sherri Montgomery

Celebrating Soulful Sustainability in Portland

The annual Muddy Boot Organic Festival (MuddyBoot.org) is an outdoor festival celebrating local organic foods and sustainable living in Portland. The festival is in its fourth year of celebrating sustainable living. Community organizers put on this event seeking to promote sustainable living practices within our local communities, thereby enhancing the health of our world, our neighborhoods and ourselves.

This fun and family-friendly event takes place over 3 days in Southeast Portland. Events kick off on Friday, September 11, with a keynote talk by environmentalist and writer Bill McKibben. Bill Bradbury, former Secretary of State for Oregon, will be giving opening remarks before Mr. McKibben's talk. Past keynote speakers have included Dr. Wes Jackson, Jean-Michel Cousteau, and Robert Kennedy Jr.

Portland's Pretend To Be a Time Traveler Day | September 12

There are already a lot of great events in Portland this Saturday to join, but none quite like being a a time traveler and confusing NW Portland.

From Drunken Rampage email:

Below is a communique from the future. Or past. We really can't tell which. The basics are:

TIME TRAVEL LOGOYou can dress like anyone lost in time. Be from the past, the future, or whenever. Wear a space suit or a fur loincloth or wear normal clothing from 2009 (but wear it wrong, as if you never saw it before and just read about it in a low-quality textbook).

We have several bars in the area, but we are only telling you about one of them (The Bitter End Pub, on Burnside and NW 20th). If you want to meet up there, they are open quite early (lunchtime). If you get lost you can always find other Time Travelers there. You can also do what several other people are doing and simply show up in the Time Rift Zone and wander about. It's only 5 blocks wide and 8 blocks long, so it's not hard to find stuff in it.

But the whole point of this event is to get out and Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Chinese Gardens Hosts Chinese Ambassador For 60th Birthday Of The People's Republic | September 12

This is the only event I know of this weekend with century old plants and diplomats. For a gigantic list of events this weekend, go here:

From our friend Jason Simms:

No, it wasn't the People's Republic of Portland gear that's been popping up all over town that inspired Chinese Ambassador Wu Jianmin to visit this weekend. Portland's connection to China runs deeper than parody t-shirts.

The VIP reception at the Chinese Gardens where Mr. Wu will speak on Saturday will actually honor a series of round numbered anniversaries: the Oregon-Fujian Sister State Association (25), the State of Oregon (150), US-China diplomatic relations (30) and Modern China (60). In numerology-obsessed Chinese style, it's called “Celebration 265.”

Mayor Sam Adams, who visited China last year, will also Read the rest of this entry »
