Large Portland Volunteer Fair in Pioneer Square: | September 11

One of my first “real” jobs in Portland was working at The Standard. It was (and probably still is) the largest employer in downtown Portland. This Friday, they are hosting a large volunteer expo in Pioneer Square with over 80 Non-Profits! Plus, free Ben & Jerry's ice cream. :)

From Standard:

The Standard Hosts 2009 Volunteer Expo in Pioneer Square: Expo brings together more than 80 nonprofits to encourage community support and volunteerism.

On Friday, September 11, 2009, Standard Insurance Company (“The Standard”) will host its third annual Volunteer Expo. The 2009 Volunteer Expo will provide the community and employees of The Standard with unique opportunities to learn more about local nonprofits and how to support these important organizations. Representatives from more than 80 nonprofits will pack Pioneer Courthouse Square to educate attendees and connect them with opportunities to contribute their time, skills and financial support, and help make a difference in their communities.

The 2009 Volunteer Expo takes place September 11, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Read the rest of this entry »

Variety for the ears. Vaudeville for the mind.

People are talking about Live Wire! Radio. Over a year ago, I started hearing murmurs, reading blog posts and forwarded e-mails. Though I didn't know what the hell Live Wire! was – I heard it compared to Prairie Home Companion, Saturday Night Live or a night at the theater. I knew there were musical guests and interviews sewn together by sketch comedy. I also found out they recorded said show at The Aladdin. All evidence pointed to something big. Something I wanted to see for myself.

Recently, I was approached by Live Wire! Radio Head Writer/Host/Associate Producer Courtenay Hameister to come to a live taping of the show and see for myself.  I wanted to go, I told her, but I wanted to do an interview with the cast and writers first. I was curious to know how this show came to be and who was behind it.

I was asked to come meet the group after their weekly meeting at their Mississippi Street offices. I sat down with: Robyn Tenenbaum (Producer, Co-creator), Jonpaul McLellan, “Webster” (videos, backstage interview, Twitter), Ralph Huntley (Bandleader, Ralph Huntley and the Mutton Chops), Tyler Hughs (Associate Content Producer, Writer, performer), Pat Janowski (Siren of Sound – sound effects, performer), Kate Sokoloff (Producer, Co-creator, Artistic Director), Sean McGrath (performer), and Hameister.

When I asked the group to describe Live Wire! to someone who had never heard of it, they were ready. Like Prairie Home Companion but 100 years younger; Terry Gross meets “Saturday Night Live” with mimes and clowns Read the rest of this entry »

Corporate Headquarters | September 10th @ Brody Theater

Look! They quoted me! Neat!

Last month, we introduced you all to Corporate Headquarters. I got some e-mails from folks saying they had a great time at the show, that the group was hysterical, that they had fallen in love with one or two members of the group (those I forwarded on to the appropriate party).

Tomorrow night at the group's second home, The Brody Theater, Corporate Headquarters will be presenting their “Best Of” show.

Like I said in my original post – this group is outstanding. They give the audience all they've got … and  “all they've got” includes the shirts of their backs, Funny Things, and sometimes they give you hugs.

The group is amazing, so they're giving away a pair of tickets to the show for our readers! To be eligible for the tickets, leave a comment below telling us why you want to attend, and please be sure you're available. I will e-mail the winner of the tickets tomorrow afternoon.
