Where To Watch The Oregon Ducks vs Boise State in Portland

This is a huge game tonight. The Oregon Ducks have really put it on the line going to the dangerous blue field in Boise in first game. AND, in front of a national audience. Dan Wetzel at Yahoo! Sports puts it like this:

Oregon vs. Boise St.: How the West is won

When Oregon coach Chip Kelly repeatedly praised Boise State in recent weeks, he wasn't just trying to lower expectations for the Ducks' season opener Thursday. He was speaking about a modern reality of college football in the West — after decades of dominance, the Pac-10 has, at the very least, a challenge to its throne. Read full article here

Oregon Ducks logoPortland sports bars are going to be packed with Ducks and Broncos fans. If you are still looking for a place to watch the game, here are some suggestions from Pipeline:

Pipeline Pick: Tanker Bar, 4825 SE Hawthorne

They have some great beers on tap (4 Ninkasi!), Buck Hunter,  and if you want to try something new—they also have the largest amount of cans of any bar in Portland (50+). Also, you are right at the top of the BARmuda triangle if you want to celebrate/drink away the sadness after the game.

Family Pick: Blitz Ladd , 2239 SE 11th Ave.

If you have the kids, Blitz Ladd might be your spot…with one issue– Kids are not allowed after 9PM (OLCC!) They have 28 HD TVs & foos ball. They also have a ping pong table, but they siad it will not be set up tonight.

Pearl Pick: Life of Riley, 300 NW 10th Ave.

Life of Riley will be in the heart of Pearl First Thursday action tonight, so it should be hopping. I've been there a few times and the happy hour is a pretty good deal. I would get there early if you don;t want to sit in the basement, but the basement isn't bad and it has pool. Apparently, their veggie burger is better than the normal burger.

Free Beer Pick: Lizard Lounge, 1323 NW Irving St

If you are a real football fan, you might not want to go here b/c they are just going to have a regular TV set up in the Mens clothing section. However, if you are a casual fan and like free Widmer beer and a first thursday party, then this might be your place. They tell me they usually are at capacity by 8PM, so get there before that.

Gresham Pick: 4th Street Brewing

We've never made a Gresham pick, but then they hit us up with this tweet and sounded pretty good:

Other bars of note: Claudias, Belmont Inn, On Deck, Thirsty Lion, Grand Central Bowl, The Agency, North 45, Paddy's (wall of alcohol), East Burn (Tequila Thursdays), Belmont Inn, Triple Nipple Nickel, Marathon Tavern (much nicer than when it was my NW dive bar pool spot 5 years ago), Virginia Cafe (say “hi” to Leah) and...suggestions from twitter after the breakRead the rest of this entry »

Rai Villanueva: Live Art | Friday, September 4 @ Egyptian Club

Posted by Meagan Kate

Portland artist brings aerosol indoors

ninjaCalling Portland a creative town is an understatement; many Portlanders consider themselves artists, live with artists, work with artists. Few, however, are gaining popularity as quickly as Rai Villanueva.

Rai's medium and live art appearances have gotten her some unique opportunities and an impressive fanbase. After seeing Rai's live work at a benefit recently, I asked to talk with her about her work, her inspiration and her show at the Egyptian club tomorrow night.

PDX Pipeline: When did your love of art begin?

Rai Villanueva: I always felt drawn to express myself emotionally through drawing and painting with virtually anything I could get my hands on. I started with tempera paint, high lighters, pencils, markers, colored pencils. Over the years, I've pretty much used every medium out there. March of 2009 I discovered the use of spray paint.I fell in love with it! I loved the movement my body naturally made while I sprayed trying to get the my lines sharp.

PDXP: Would you consider yourself a 'graffiti artist'?

RV: I really appreciate street art and graffiti. I think it's extremely important to treat urban art movements seriously. I've draw a lot of inspiration from it, but I don't consider myself a graffiti artist. Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Improv Freaks Out Clackamas, America This Saturday

It looks like Clackamas is tired of being left out of the “Keep Portland Weird” action.

From Press Release:

Hundreds to Unexpectedly Break Out in Viral Dance at Clackamas Town Center

Portland, Oregon — Saturday, September 5th, 2009 — Portland Improv, a social experiment and performing arts group known to push the limits on the social norm, will be hosting their latest event, dubbed, "Let's Dance!," at the Clackamas Town Clackamas Town Center at two o'clock p.m. within the main mall corridor in front of the Macy's Home Furniture Store. An audio track will begin playing through the mall speaker system, and two of our dancers will begin performing before the unsuspecting shoppers, followed by more and more of our dancers until all four-hundred are showing off their moves. By the end of three-minute dance, we hope to have many shoppers picking up the moves as well, right in time for the dance to end just as quickly as it began, while all of the dancers will dissipate into the rest of the crowd.
