I took this pic a couple summers ago. The Hawthorne Street Fair is Sunday and you'll probably see a lot of busking in addition to the regular events and art displays.

Non-Profit Volunteer Opportunities to Help Portland's Pets

Do you have any Portland Non-profit suggestions? Comment them below.

Sent over from our friends @ EngineWorks

Are you a lover of pets or animals and want to give back to the animals of Portland? Here are three different non-profit animal organizations that could use your love and help.

Oregon Humane Society

Since 1868 the Oregon Humane Society has relied entirely on private donations and volunteers to help animals find a home. Since then it has become the largest and oldest humane society in the Pacific Northwest, by helping over 10,000 animals per year. In 1997 the Oregon Humane Society made history when it opened the nation's first Animal Medical and Learning Center. Volunteer opportunities include foster care, dog walking, assistance with special events, and more.   The Oregon Humane Society is looking for volunteers that are any age or ability!  You will join a team of over 1,000 compassionate volunteers that help facilitate hundreds of animal adoptions per year.

Animal Aid

Since 1969 Animal Aid has served the Portland Metro area animal community. This organization strives to reduce animal birth rates and suffering through public education programs. Animal Aid uses its monetary fund to help families or individuals in financial distress help their pets in need of urgent veterinary care. Animal Aid also provides adoption services for over 125 dogs and cats and shelters for another 40-50 abandoned animals every year. Volunteers range in age from 6-80 years old and act as caregivers, event coordinators, and foster home coordinators.  You can be a caregiver, an event coordinator, or offer your home up as a foster parent to one of hundreds of animals throughout Portland.   Weekend and weekday opportunities also exist!

Portland Animal Welfare Team

The Portland Animal Welfare Team makes veterinary care accessible to the pets of those experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty. Homeless shelters do not allow pets inside, leaving the animals outside and unattended. The emotional stress to provide adequate care can often be overwhelming. The Portland Animal Welfare provides six "street" clinics each year, which provide care for an average of 70 animals per clinic. Volunteers help with outreach, the health clinics, community events, and many other activities. The PAW team is looking for many different veterinary supplies and general supplies.  Check out their list of critical ongoing medical supplies needed to keep their operations running.

These are 3 organizations that we picked; now it's your turn!

Give Back, Even Without Time

If you're short on time and aren't able to volunteer at one of these organizations there's still a way to help them or any other local "pet-friendly" organization of your choice. EngineWorks, a local company, is putting on a contest, "Helping Animals One Search at a Time." With a simple blog post you could help an organization generate more donations through the web.

For more details on the contest visit http://www.engineworks.com/helping-animals/

Wax Fingers – August 15th @ Doug Fir

Posted by Nathalie Weinstein

Three dudes and a laptop

waxfingerspicPortland musicians Wax Fingers will bring their aggressive, atmospheric math rock to the Doug Fir Lounge Saturday night with Experimental Dental School, Swim Swam Swun and Mighty Tiger.

If you have a hankering for live, melt-your-face-off indie rock this weekend, then this show is for you, and at only $7 for admission, it's a bargain.

Zack Jacobson (guitar), Tommy Franzen (drums) and Pete Bosack (guitar and vocals) met in 2006 on the virtual world of Craigslist.

"We are a Craiglist band," said Jacobson. "I moved here with the intention of finding like minded musicians, so the first thing I did was put out an ad on Craigslist."

Jacobson says he instantly clicked with Bosack and Franzen, and after repeated efforts at trying out bassists after the band's current bassist left, the group decided to leave the bass notes up their handy laptop, which is present at every show.

A Southeast Portlander, Jacobson's favorite bridge is the St. John's and when he needs a stiff drink, he heads to either Beulahland or Sidestreet Tavern for a freshly squeezed gin and juice. He was kind enough to chat with me after band rehearsal one night about Wax Finger's sound, what he's been reading, and the five albums he couldn't live without. Read the rest of this entry »

It's a Terrible Movie! | August 16th @ Coho Theater

Posted by Nathalie Weinstein

terriblemovieflierwebIt's movie night. You pay your $12 admission and buy your $5 small cola and head into the theater to be entertained. Inevitably, the movie is terrible and you find yourself biting your tongue so you don't start shouting obscenities at the screen and demanding your money back.

But what if you went into it knowing the movie was going to be awful? That's the idea behind It's A Terrible Movie!, a one night event at (and benefiting) the Coho Theater this Sunday, August 16 at 10 p.m.

The brainchild of Chopsticks karaoke jockey and Man About Town Will Radik, the event will feature a screening of Masters of the Universe with running, Mystery Science Theater 3000-style commentary by Radik, Fatboy Roberts of Cort and Fatboy on KUFO, and Erik Henriksen, Portland Mercury film editor and author of The Warriors comic.

Don't worry; heckling and smart-ass comments from the audience are welcome and encouraged. Admission is on a sliding scale (between $5 and $10) and all proceeds go to the Coho Theatre, a local non-profit theatre company that puts on some of the most creative productions in town.

WHAT: It's a Terrible Movie

WHEN: Sunday, August 16 @ 10 p.m.

WHERE?: Coho Theatre [2257 NW Raleigh St]

HOW MUCH?: $5-10 sliding scale
