Ground Kontrol 10th Anniversary + Free Play Tonight!

I feel it is my duty to let you people know about the awesomeness of Ground Kontrol's anniversary rampagessweek. Of course, that means you get to know about Free Play Wednesday. I do this in the hopes that if you see me and are hogging the Rampage, you jump off. There are a lot of buildings I need to destroy and I don't want to use $50 to do it. $5 though…that is perfect.

Portland Art Showcase: Incubator @ Someday Lounge | August 25th

Posted by Kimberly Gehl

Bringing you a monthly showcase of music, theater, dance, live visual art, shadow puppetry, 2181319091_3ba3d780fc_bcomedy and abstract performance art, the “Someday Incubator” is one of the most dynamic events in Portland. Better yet? It's free!

Curated by rock dilettante Myrrh Larsen and demiaustère co-curatrix Mary-Suzanne, this 3 hour showcase of experimental performance art has transformed from “an insiders-only 'open mic' for the fringe arts scene… into a curated showcase of some of the city's most promising and ambitious performance works-in-progress.”

The Incubator occurs one Tuesday every month and artists interested in performing at future events are strongly encouraged to come meet the curators, chat with fellow artists, and see what the Incubator is all about.

Portland Women's Crisis Line Benefit | August 28th

Posted by Meagan Kate

SIN09_logoFINAL

Nearly 2,000 calls come to The Portland Women's Crisis Line each month, and volunteers are there to offer resources, emergency shelter and comfort; services that women of our state and city desperately need.  According to The PWCL, one in ten Oregon women reports being sexually or physically abused by their current or last partner.

For the last seven years, The PWCL has obtained  the majority of their yearly donations through a gala and auction. This year's event, titled “Safety in Numbers” will be Friday, August 28th at The Armory.

I spoke with Molly Gray, Co-Chair of PWCL's Board of Directors who said that the goal is to reach $64,000 in donations from the event. However, the most important piece of the event, Gray emphasized, was to ensure people learned about The PWCL and the resources they offer. Read the rest of this entry »

From Press Release:

Gilberto Santa Rosa is one of the most esteemed, and certainly one of the most Gilberto Santa Rosa @ Roselandtradition-minded, soneros to rise to fame in the 1980s, and his popularity and acclaim only increased in subsequent decades, as did his stateliness. His style of salsa isn't easily categorized, for he often changes approach from one album to the next.

His straight-ahead, dance-oriented albums (e.g., Perspectiva [1991], Auténtico [2004]) as well as his eclectic ones (Esencia [1996], Expresión [1999]) tend to be his most critically celebrated. On the other hand, his lavish albums (A Dos Tiempos de un Tiempo [1992], De Cara al Viento [1994]) as well as his primarily romantic ones (Viceversa [2002], Directo al Corazón [2006]) tend to be his broadest-selling. Consequently, Santa Rosa is one of the more discussed salsa artists of his time. For sure, there's significant interest in his music and respect for his talent; however, there's little consensus about Santa Rosa's position within salsa, since his style is ever-changing.

If Santa Rosa's music tends to differ stylistically from album to album, if not sometimes even song to song, his legacy remains firmly in place. He is El Caballero de la Salsa, or in English, Read the rest of this entry »

I hear this guy is bigtime. I like their recommendation on protective gear, but what do you bring to protect you from the axe? I've played at lot of RPS and from what I remember, paper doesn't cover an axe.

Video: 2009 Portland Adult Soap Box Derby + CRASH @ Mount Tabor Park

2009 Adult Soap Box Derby
Mount Tabor Park
Portland, Oregon
Filmed by brewcaster
Music: 'Frenzy' By: Locust Avenue

Pretty….Pretty…cool. Brewcaster's Portland vimeo group is here and Pipeline's is here.

From NW Sports Guy (who has more videos & pictures on his site here):

In addition to poor construction, the vehicles most likely to crash have 1) poorly secured bicycle wheels 2) a high center of gravity and 3) high occupancy. Add in alcohol, a steep down grade and spectators throwing water balloons, and you get the perfect storm for destruction. In the above video, you can hear a water balloon impact against the soap box car, causing it to swerve and lose control. The spectator in the video wound up with a broken nose and was taken to the hospital. Good times had by all.

Folk Up Your Weekend in Mississippi | August 22 & 23

Folk Up Your Weekend in Mississippi

Jolie Holland & The Hunting Party @ Mississippi Studios
August 22, 9pm $10

Jolie Holland  (who some might know from The Be Good Tanyas) has the talents of Elizabeth Cotten if she had a backing band, the delta soul of Robert Johnson (before he sold it to the Devil) and the voice of an angel, with the most celestial of blues. Touring now on her fourth solo album, Jolie Holland (on ANTI-, who also houses the legendary Tom Waits, among others) can woo the strings off a guitar and still make it sound pretty. With her band, The Hunting Party, this show will be worth more than the expanse of Jolie's melancholy vocal timbre.

Rumor: Dandy Warhols Playing Free Unannounced Show @ Rontoms

Dandy Warhol action at the Portland Music Awards

[Dandy Warhol action from 2008 Portland Music Awards. Photo by The Mixtress]

Friday, August 21, 6:45PM: I was sent a rumor about 30 minutes ago that there will be a free Dandy Warhols show at Rontoms on Sunday. It has not been announced to the media yet, but apparently that will happen soon will not happen. The “unidentified source” is a pretty trustworthy individual inside operations, so I would give it a 90% chance right now. I will update when more info becomes available.

Update 1AM: the Mercury has a post on it as well although no new info. Don't know if they heard it from another source or not…

Update August 22, 7PM: The Dandy's put this up about an hour ago on their twitter:

  • Dandies_normal

TheDandyWarhols: I hear there's a super secret special guest @ Rontoms Sunday night at 1030 PM and it's FREE (and there's no way in hell u'll b disappointed)

Update August 23, 2PM: Just got an email that Morning Teleportation and Ded Pidgeon will be opening for the Dandy's tonight.
