Folk Up Your Weekend in Mississippi
Jolie Holland & The Hunting Party @ Mississippi Studios
August 22, 9pm $10
Jolie Holland (who some might know from The Be Good Tanyas) has the talents of Elizabeth Cotten if she had a backing band, the delta soul of Robert Johnson (before he sold it to the Devil) and the voice of an angel, with the most celestial of blues. Touring now on her fourth solo album, Jolie Holland (on ANTI-, who also houses the legendary Tom Waits, among others) can woo the strings off a guitar and still make it sound pretty. With her band, The Hunting Party, this show will be worth more than the expanse of Jolie's melancholy vocal timbre.

And not to mention the following day, same Bat-Time, same Bat-Channel (but not really, because the shows start at different times, but they're both at Mississippi Studios!) You can catch Drew Grow's song(s) release!

From NAT'L Recordings:
"Since people now tend to buy music one song at a time digitally, why not provide one song at a time physically as well, and release more frequently than the standard record cycle? This model nods to a time when labels released 7" (45's) for artists with a single and a b-side, before finally compiling the songs on a 12" record. The first release on NAT'L Recordings includes the song "Bootstraps" as the a-side, and "Friendly Fire" as the b-side. "Bootstraps" is like a chain-gang influenced version of "Spider" from Drew's solo album Next Lips — charting new territory lyrically and sonically with the added influence of the Pastors' Wives."

Birds & Batteries http://www.myspace.com/birdsbatteries
San Francisco's Birds & Batteries perform a stew of electronic blips and beats along with flowing vocals that play out like something you might hear on Judy Jetson's iPod — a mix of electronic and pop in a way that has a certain mellow energy. There are enough layers to keep you interested, but they're laid out in just the right amount of chill.
