First Friday Art: Astoria Comes to Portland | August 7
August 5, 2009 — PDXPIPELINEYou might know John Brodie from his June art project 'Store for a Month' or as the ex-Manager of LaLuna, former longtime manager of Pink Martini, former manager of Muu-Muus and current owner of Le Happy creperie. He and several other artists have been participating in a two month art show between Astoria in Portland. Last month was Astoria's turn for this great show and starting Friday, it will finally come to Portland.
From (the original July) Press Release:
ASTORIA AND PORTLAND ARTISTS EXCHANGE IDEAS AND CITIES
PORTLAND, OR / ASTORIA, OR — It started after dinner at the Columbian Cafe on a rainy fall nigh tin Astoria. The discussion had moved to the Voodoo Room next door. Portland artists John Brodie and Blair Saxon-Hill were visiting and had met up with some of their Astoria contemporaries. The artists from the two cities were talking about the openings they had just attended, what they were working on now, and how it would be interesting to continue the dialogue beyond just that night. "We should do a group show in Portland and you guys should do a show down here," an Astoria artist said. "Let's do it"was the reply.
So the idea was born for "Portland Comes to Astoria" and "Astoria Comes to Portland". Seven artists from each city (14 total) will show in each other's hometown for back-to-back shows during the months of July and August. It is an exchange of ideas, an exchange of art, and a discussion on how place and geography inspires and informs one's art making. The seven Portland artists will show in July at a vacant former gallery in Astoria. The seven Astoria artists will show in August at 12×16 Gallery in Portland. They will caravan to each other's cities, sleep in each other's houses and talk about each other's work. And they will tell their friends and community in their hometown to come out and see some art by some of their new friends not so far away.
