Company of Thieves – “Oscar Wilde” (Official)

Description: The debut video from Chicago's own, Company of Thieves! Download this video: here. From the album: ORDINARY RICHES (available everywhere now)
Get it on iTunes: here

Company of Thieves Will Steal Your Heart and Make it Dance

Earlier this year I got the chance to sit in on an acoustic recording session with Company of Thieves and let me tell you: Marc Walloch's guitar strings were burning out only perfect riffs,  Mike Ortiz found more beats in a guitar case than there are roses in Portland, and the bluesy-soul vocals of Genevieve Schatz filled the room (I'm convinced she only uses a microphone for the sake of irony). These three kids from Chicago have the vitality of life bursting from their songs and you will see it in their live show.

Their video "Oscar Wilde" (above) visually follows Rushmore in a nutshell. Literary reference and independent movie homage mashed up with indie music? This band cries Portland.

First Friday Art: Astoria Comes to Portland | August 7

You might know John Brodie from his June art project 'Store for a Month' or as the ex-Manager of LaLuna, former longtime manager of Pink Martini, former manager of Muu-Muus and current owner of Le Happy creperie. He and several other artists have been participating in a two month art show between Astoria in Portland. Last month was Astoria's turn for this great show and starting Friday, it will finally come to Portland.

From (the original July) Press Release:

Roger HayesASTORIA AND PORTLAND ARTISTS EXCHANGE IDEAS AND CITIES

PORTLAND, OR / ASTORIA, OR — It started after dinner at the Columbian Cafe on a rainy fall nigh tin Astoria. The discussion had moved to the Voodoo Room next door. Portland artists John Brodie and Blair Saxon-Hill were visiting and had met up with some of their Astoria contemporaries. The artists from the two cities were talking about the openings they had just attended, what they were working on now, and how it would be interesting to continue the dialogue beyond just that night. "We should do a group show in Portland and you guys should do a show down here," an Astoria artist said. "Let's do it"was the reply.

So the idea was born for "Portland Comes to Astoria" and "Astoria Comes to Portland". Seven artists from each city (14 total) will show in each other's hometown for back-to-back shows during the months of July and August. It is an exchange of ideas, an exchange of art, and a discussion on how place and geography inspires and informs one's art making. The seven Portland artists will show in July at a vacant former gallery in Astoria. The seven Astoria artists will Read the rest of this entry »

Bite of Oregon Preview @ Portland Waterfront | August 7-9, 2009

Bite of Oregon: As if we needed another excuse to eat and drink the best Oregon had to offer…

My favorite unholy trinity — beer, food, and wine (or, as I like to call it, the Blood of Christ) — will be present at Tom McCall Waterfront Park this weekend for the 26th annual Bite of Oregon. If you love food, like myself, you will have your chance to fill up on 80+ unique dishes and get your drink on with the 38 local vintners and 12 local breweries.

And if that isn't enough, considering that the weather is supposed to be mid seventies, (as opposed to the miserable triple digits of two weekends ago) it's a good excuse to get out of the house, grub on some of Oregon's finest, all the while benefiting the Special Olympics of Oregon.

SPOILER ALERT: in case you are neurotic Read the rest of this entry »
