The Devil and Daniel Johnston Come To Portland | September 3 @ Wonder Ballroom

Posted by Mike Harper

Hi, how are you, Portland?

dan_johnIf you have never heard of Daniel Johnston, I wouldn't be surprised. He is one of those musicians with a cult following that, despite his overwhelming talent and voluminous album of music, has slipped under the general public's radar for decades now.

If you want the run down, and want to watch a good documentary filled with home-written, basement recorded, well-rounded folk-popish tunes, go pick up The Devil and Daniel Johnston from Movie Madness and take in the secret legend that is Daniel Johnston.

And if you don't have time to pick up the movie, just buy your tickets for the Wonder Ballroom and see him live. I promise you it will be worth it, even after "convenience charges."

Daniel Johnston @ Wonder Ballroom
September 3; 8pm $18

Novels in Progress @ Worksound | August 30

Posted by Sasha Burchuk

Alright, we live in Portland, a city with a proud literary tradition that has very few writers that it can call its own. Yes. I know Chuck Palahniuk lives here now. What. Still. Good readings in Portland are few and far between, and this is more likely to be on the live-action side of things as it is likely to generate a good dialogue between the audience and the kinkers; and much like the ironically elaborate scenarios that Erik Bader and Matthew Korfhage will construct that could only feasibly happen once, this too is one time only, a novel opportunity.

This Sunday, Matthew Korfhage and Erik Bader invite you to Worksound Gallery to witness Novels In Progress — which just as the title would suggest is an exhibition of the authors' unfinished novels.

Nathalie & Meagan Take Bumbershoot | September 5-7th, Seattle

Looking for Portland weekend events? Check out our list here!

Posted by Meagan Kate

BumbershootWell, PDX Pipeline readers, we have exciting news! Fellow writer Nathalie Weinstein and I will be attending the Bumbershoot Music Festival next weekend.

Bumbershoot®: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival is in it's 39th year drawing the best in comedy, music, theatre, dance and visual art – right in Seattle Center. Its organizers expect more than 150,000 attendants from all over the world.

So Nathalie and I will be hopping on the train, crashing on my cousin's couch and sending you information from the hot and steamy Bumbershoot press room!

I've never been in a festival 'press room' before, so I assume it will be hot and steamy. I imagine Nathalie on an old rotary phone yelling “Did ya hear the news? BIG NEWS!” every half hour or so. I will run around carrying stacks of paper; yellow #2 pencils will be holding back my unkempt mane as I chain smoke.

My fantasies are neither here nor there. Apologies.

However – this is where you all come into play. Read the rest of this entry »

Mos Def @ Roseland This Saturday + Win Tickets

Did you know that Mos Def rescheduled his May show to this Saturday!? It is true and you can win tickets from us right here until 4PM today.

Related Posts and Info:

From Roseland:

Initially regarded as one of the most promising rappers to emerge in the late '90s, Mos-Def-PosterMos Def turned to acting in subsequent years as music became a secondary concern for him. He did release new music from time to time, including albums such as The New Danger (2004), but his output was erratic and seemingly governed by whim.

Mos Def nonetheless continued to draw attention, especially from critics and underground rap fans, and his classic breakthrough albums — Black Star (1998), a collaboration with Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek; and Black on Both Sides (1999), his solo debut — continued to be revered, all the more so as time marched forward. Mos Def often used his renown for political purposes, protesting in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Jena Six incident in 2007, for instance.

Adam Marsland @ Music Millennium | August 28th

Posted by Meagan Kate

adammarsland-pressshotAdam Marsland has long been considered a staple in the Los Angeles music scene after his time a member of Cockeyed Ghost and his solo work over the last ten years. Though he may not be a household name around the world – his talent is hard to ignore and his passion for songwriting is clear.

Marsland's new double album Go West has been more of a personal challenge rather than a musical one. During the development for the album, Marsland's brother passed away suddenly and his sister-in-law was brutally murdered. Most people would give up the recording process here – but Adam Marsland kept going – until someone stole his recording equipment.

After strangers came across Marsland's equipment at a swap meet and returned it to him, asking nothing in return, he felt it important to power through. Go West became a double album, and he's starting his tour tomorrow – right here in Portland. Read the rest of this entry »

2410 Mega Party – 2009: A Bass Odyssey | August 29

Posted by Stephanie El-Hajj

2009 A Bass OdysseyGot plans Saturday night? Break them.

Summer's almost over, you need to spend your remaining weekends wisely.

You're going to 2009: A Bass Odyssey at 2410, and you won't regret it. Bring your friends, even that one who's not impressed by the dance scene. Even they won't be disappointed.

Bass Odyssey has all the elements for a killer summer party: top notch headliners, End,User, and Belladonnakillz and Loki as well as an impressive lineup of more than ten local and national djs spinning crazy thumpin' drumnbass, dubstep, breakcore and more.

Three different lighting crews are coming, and there'll be a VJ on hand to light up your night. When you need a breather, kick back and mash buttons as you play video games (VIDEOGAMES!) — you'll be the visualizations on room two.

You will dance. You will dance a lot. And you will have a really, really good time.

Says Mortalgrey, of UndaDawgz, "If you love hard heavy beats, the linuep speaks for itself. I can say that the crews working on this have over 20 years of experience throwing parties… With the three lighting crews, there will be a full on visual assault in addition to the massive sound…"

Once the dubstep starts, I'm going to dancing front and center. Where will you be?

Dress to impress – $100 to the person with the best space theme costume! Read the rest of this entry »
