The Cool Last Thursday: Goodfoot Book Release/ Art Opening

(Pipeline is giving away one of these books! See bottom of post for details!)

Well, it is going to be 100+ tomorrow during Last Thursday. Even though it might have the trappings of people auditioning for Burning Man, I don't think anyone wants to have the temperatures of the desert as well. Therefore, you can go to the cool confines of the Goodfoot Lounge and check out a pretty great art show/book release.

I called Jason and he said they have that room nice and cool with extra AC output, and if you email him at jbrown@poboyart.com + tell him you saw this on Pipeline–he is reserving 20 signed books for us. There are only 100 signed by the artists and they will be gone after opening night. Look at the artist list after the break. I would bet on it!

There are only 100 signed by the artists and they are sure to sell out opening night. So there ya go. You can see a full preview of the book here.

Third Eye Theatre presents Dylan Hillerman's Grand Guignol| Running through August 1st

Posted by Kimberly Gehl

You walk into the Back Door Theatre, a small and intimate space; the perfect atmosphere for you to guiltlessly divulge in some deliciously satisfying voyeurism. An eerie, but oddly comforting (is it familiar?) music plays in the background as you wait for the show to start. You are impressed to discover that this music is live, that pianist Amorèe Lovell is passionately playing just a few feet away from you. Your scan your surroundings as you sit in eager anticipation for the start of what has been described to you as "must-see sexy, thrilling and darkly humorous theatre." You're not sure exactly what to expect, but you are there because – compelled by an undeniable curiosity – you didn't want to miss the opportunity to experience it yourself.

The show is Dylan Hillerman's Grand Guignol (pronounced "grahn geen-yol"), a collection of four original works presented by three local playwrights from the wonderfully "twisted" Third Eye Theatre. The seductive and sadistic Mistress of Ceremonies along with a troupe of talented and fantastic actors are about to delight and intrigue the audience with gripping stories. The audience dives into the Read the rest of this entry »

Damian Marley & Nas @ Roseland | July 31

(Win a pair of tickets to this show. Details @ the bottom)

Two big talents, one small venue, one night only

nas and marley, roseland

Two of the biggest talents in hip-hop and reggae will appear at one of Portland's smaller venues this Friday

night as Nas and Damien "Junior Gong" Marley tear up the stage at the Roseland.

The only child born to the late Bob Marley and former Miss World 1976 Cindy Breakspeare, Marley was propelled into the upper echelons of reggae fame with his 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock. He is the first, and only Jamaican reggae artist in history to win two Grammy awards on the same night. Whether he's preaching the social change that his father worked for on the track ‘Move!' or riffing on the one night stand on dance track ‘All Night', Marley impresses with his mix of reggae and toasting, a Jamaican music form that is a mix of talking and chanting over a beat, believed by many to have influenced the development of modern-day emceeing in hip hop music.

Marley recently collaborated with bad boy Nas on his newest album Read the rest of this entry »

July 30: BUMPS Premiere @ Clinton St Theater: "bizarre atmosphere of alienation and teen sexuality"

Posted By Jeff Guay

BUMPS trailer

"This shit is a true story" begins local non-budget filmmaker Bob Moricz' latest feature, a digital interpretation of real events which led to as many as eighteen high school girls, none older than sixteen, agreeing to get pregnant and raise their children together in their small town in Massachusetts.

Set in Portland with a cast of six wonderful local young actresses, BUMPS successfully evokes a bizarre atmosphere of alienation and teen sexuality, while simultaneously disrupting dramatic moments with interjections by Moricz himself, cutting in non-narrative exchanges between he and his actresses and even allowing us to see him edit the movie on his computer. The result will throw some people, but I was surprised at how well the narrative flowed, either despite or because of these often hilarious moments of directorial interjection.

At one intense moment, for instance, a pregnant teen gets so worked up that she screams at a young child skateboarding past the shot. We hear Moricz apologize behind the camera, "Sorry, she's just in her character."

BUMPS also stands out in aesthetic quality, from Read the rest of this entry »

Review & Pictures: PDX Pop Now! 2009

Deeley Ceelay

Deelay Ceelay @ PDX Pop Now!

Despite the fires of hell winking down on Portland via the noonday sun this entire weekend, people refrained from hiding in air-conditioned bars and apartments and popped up for PDX Pop Now! Fest at Rotture in multitudes. Over 24 hours of live local bands played over the expanse of 3 days, and all for the fantastic price of FREE! If there weren't enough amazing events this past weekend already, leave it to PPN! to hand us

I spent my weekend drowning in sweat between the Oregon Brewers Fest (sweet, hoppy, waterside refreshment), the Portland Zine Symposium (the cut and paste community at its best), a smattering of random little shows, but Friday and Saturday had me glued to the steadfast supply of music that was PDX Pop Now! Fest.

Friday played the spectrum, from the elaborate collision of Chamber of Commerce (Blue Cranes and Paxselin Quartet), to the raucous event that was Animal Farm (random, uninvited dancing white girl included), ending with great sets by Explode Into Colors and The Minus 5. Morning Teleportation got the young crowd dancing early despite the heat on Saturday. On the outside stage Magic Johnson showed Portland some punk love, opening the hottest set of the day.

Once the sun hid behind the array of random buildings on 3rd, everyone filed inside for Church. Despite the huge fans indoors, the fans of Church kept that muggy inside stage cozy. Tara Jane O'Neil played a bit of tambourine hand-out before Deeley Ceelay put on a smoke-n-mirrors show of syncopated madness! Laura Gibson cooled down the crowd with her folky soft cooing before Nice Nice, Pierced Arrows and Strength came on stage to fill out a perfect day of music (despite power surges and heat waves).
