Corky Smells The Glove: Christopher Guest Trivia Night | July 11

Christopher Guest's Waiting for Guffman clip: “The Auditions”

As you might know, I am big fan of the Shanrocks Trivia. Her weekly nights are always good and occasionally she/they have one of the extra special events. The last one was Arrested Development Trivia and this Saturday is Christopher Guest Trivia. Plus you can win prizes like an “Aerosmith-themed trophy!” Good stuff indeed.

From Press Release:

Hello, Portland! If you enjoy the work of Christopher Guest, you're probably familiar with the loudest band in England, a troop of starry-eyed actors from Blaine, and folk music producer Irving Steinbloom's untimely death . . . or maybe you just have a god-like love of terriers. This trivia quiz will challenge your knowledge of Guest's mockumentaries:

This Is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind, and Best in Show. I can quiz or not quiz for hours, and still find something to not quiz about, but Corky St. Clair must be shared with the world!

Questions will include a few rounds Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Theater: Imago Stage Two Original One-Acts | July 10-11 & 17-18

Veterans of the Imago Theatre Stage Two Original One-Acts

imago theater: desperationThe lights go down and the theatre is drowned in darkness. The air is heavy with the sounds of whales. For half a minute you loose your sense of place.

Out of this murky underwater midnight comes Bryce Flint-Sommerville's new play, Breaching.

This is a play that is set inside the stomach of a whale.

Evan and Dan have been swallowed — along with a sofa, a toy piano, and a couple of torn seines — in a perfect metaphor for two parasites in limbo. While they struggle to remember the world outside and a time before, they struggle to forget that they are locked inside of a whale. Strangers with opposing whims and opinions when it comes to everything, they are beyond attempting to humor one another, having been dragged down to a place where even something as mundane as "C. Thomas Howell!" can be considered a major breakthrough.

In a vacuum where nothing ever happens, they are waiting for something to happen. Wracked with a longing to return to the surface they act out their fantasies of calling the phone company to complain or they stage Read the rest of this entry »

July 11: East Side Flea Market at Voodoo Too

Flea markets don't happen in inner SE/NE very often. In fact, I believe this is the first “East Side Flea Market” at Voodoo. Considering the neighborhood and the venue, could be rather interesting stuff out there.

2009 Bastille Day Block Party at Pix Patisserie: July 11

On Saturday, there will be at least three interesting events in North Portland. First is the Mississippi Street Fair, second is this Michael Jackson tribute and finally we have the always nice Bastille Day celebration at Pix Patisserie. Last year they had a pillow fight, but those are so passe' now (BOOM! 2 months living partying on the coast of France pays off!).

On Saturday, you could easily catch some Thriller, some street fair drumming and this prison-break-loving, French block party.

Third Annual BASTILLE DAY CELEBRATION BLOCK PARTY!

This year we have an extra special theme…
Gastronomical Oregon (Just as good as France!)

France. Just like how visions of sugar plums dance through your head at Christmas, when you think of France you can't help but envision Camembert, warm crusty baguettes, Chateauneuf du Pape, foie gras, escargot, Cognac, dark chocolate…need I go on? These days, many of us are struggling to find the extra cash to go to a French restaurant, more or less France itself. So, Pix is keeping it local this Bastille Day featuring Read the rest of this entry »
