From Leigh Feldman:

Portland Weekend EventsThings I'm currently jocking…

The fact that it's Father's Day on Sunday! As a young child (read: ages 4-26) I used to go into his closet and gift wrap something he already owned and give it to him. This year I got him something much better .. Congrats you're gonna be a grandfather!! Just kidding. No child yet, but I would like to take this chance to tell you how wonderful you are Dad and hope that everyone here does the same on Sunday, not just for their father, but for anyone and everyone around them that they love.

Free music ish… This mix from DJ 208, who held it down at the Michael Jordan party recently. It's pretty partytastic – http://tinyurl.com/nk8lhh

All the weird stuff going on this weekend — Swinger Clubs, Air Sex, Bike Rides, Free Beer Events, Fashion Shows, Dominatrix led Comedy Events. This city is fantastic. PS — I finally got twitter and will talking about all the things I see. @leighfeldman3. I promise it will be absolutely ridiculous.

Life is a party, everyone is just waiting to be invited.
See you all out and about!

(We have two pairs of tickets to this show. Read bottom of post for more info)

Quasi at Backspace
Portland, Oregon
April 3, 2009
Shot by Julian Chadwick

This video is from the last performance I saw Quasi at Backspace (and the last they performed I believe). They are playing a pretty cool show on Thursday @ Disjecta.

From Website and Press Release:

Tin House and Disjecta present
Arty Words Vol. 2
Zak Smith w/ special guest Jon Raymond
w/ music by Quasi

Thu. June. 18th / 7:30 pm / $7 (purchase from Paypal below)

Disjecta and Tin House return to a winning formula for the next installment of Arty Words, the literary/art/music sensation too unwieldy to be called an event. Vol. II features Los Angeles artist and writer Zak Smith, Portland's own Jon Raymond and a very special musical performance by Quasi.

Zak Smith does for alt porn what Hunter S. Thompson did for motorcycle gangs and Tom Wolfe for psychedelica.

Punk artist and icon Zak Smith made a name for himself by visually re-creating Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and drawing pictures of girls in the “naked girl business.” His artistic pedigree and acute observation landed him in high-profile exhibits at the Whitney and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Somewhere along the line, Smith went from the observer to the observed, from the guy with a sketchpad to the guy on-screen doing the unnamable for anyone eighteen or older to see.

We Did Porn follows Zak Smith (aka Zak Sabbath) from the New York art scene to Los Angeles 's seedy, yet colorful, underbelly—the world of alt porn. Through memoir and more than one hundred drawings, Smith narrates his foray into pornography and Read the rest of this entry »

Mortified Returns to Someday Lounge + Win tickets | June 19 & 20

(Win tickets to Mortified. Info at bottom of the post)

Also, PDX Pipeline's own Meagan Kate will be speaking at this Mortified. GONNA BE SO GOOD. Read her last post about Mortified Portland here

Posted by Dan Wheeler

You did it.
I did it.
We ALL did it:

Wrote teen-aged unrequited love songs. Kept emotionally overwrought diaries of our seventh grade club-kid escapades. Composed serious poetry about our sexuality before we'd even had our first kiss. Attended public school in the 80's.

We are all pathetic. We are all imperfect. We all have reason to be Mortified.

Mortified is a series of readings held in cities across the country. Volunteers share their most embarrassing moments in their former selves' own unashamed words. The performances take the form of Read the rest of this entry »

Back Fence PDX Turns One Year Old: June 17th @ Mission Theater

Posted by Meagan Kate

Back Fence PDX is a Pipeline favorite. We love these ladies and are so excited to see their one-year birthday show!

Wednesday, June 17th at the Mission Theater, Back Fence will be celebrating its first year of existence. Sure, every show is like a special little snowflake – but this one is the most specialist of them all!

The show that began at a creperie with 60 people in attendance, has outgrown its space and moved to the Mission Theater.  The event has gotten recognized by some of the largest publications in Oregon and continues to impress new attendees with its style and regulars with the continued honesty of its storytellers.

If you have never been to a Back Fence PDX event, this is the perfect opportunity to see people telling their unscripted stories of heartbreak, embarrassment, hilarity and sex. There's always a story about sex.

Doors will open at 6, as usual — but instead of getting embarrassingly drunk and waiting until 7:30 for the show to start – there will be hot ladies in bikinis at 7:15! That's right, kids, you read that correctly! Popina Swimsuits will be on display. Ogling is encouraged.

Just like the last event, Tiny Meat will be selling wallets at intermission – so make sure you stop by the merch table to check them out!

This show's amazing story tellers will be:

VIVA  LAS VEGAS Stripper and author

RAEL DORNFEST UX Engineer, Twitter

JAMI CURL Owner, Saint Cupcake

PEMA TEETER Playwright and ghostwriter

ERIC SCHNIEWIND Geologist

NICOLE GEORGES Comic artist and advice columnist

JEFF HARDISON Preacher's Grandson

Check out the Back Fence PDX site for more detailed info about the storytellers, and to see past posts and updates.

Don't forget to show up early to get a seat and a drink before the theater fills up and you find yourself standing up against a pillar or sitting next to Pipeline's very own Nathalie Weinstein and I while we hold our post at the merch table. Nobody wants that.

WHAT: Back Fence PDX

WHEN: Wednesday, June 17th. Doors at 6pm, fashion show at 7:15, show at 7:30

WHERE: Mission Theater

TICKETS?: Buy them online for $10; $12 at the door

Portland Naked Bike Ride Picture

An estimated 5,000 take part in Portland’s Naked Bike Ride
The masses assemble in Northwest Portland prior to the World Naked Bike Ride. There were bikes and flesh as far as the eye could see in every direction when I took this photo (from the roof of a school bus).

If you have pictures or storied from the ride, please comment them. Here is a breakdown from one commenter on the Pipeline who took part in an earlier naked bike ride:

I arrived at the Coe circle at about 1:20 PM. The weather was nice and calm and nearly 70 degrees.  About 8 riders were there.  There was 1 couple with a tandem and they were in the process of body painting.  He was nude and she was wielding the brush. One other girl was there and she was not yet making any move toward stripping.  3 of the men had their tops off but no shorts off at this time, except the man being painted.  Within 5 minutes 2 of the other men had their shorts off.  A couple of curiosity seekers joined us and more riders arrived including several more girls/women.

No one seemed to be in charge, which is just as well, since nearly everyone was here to do only one thing.  Get naked and Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight: Dance Party @ Backspace With Deelay Ceelay

(Full Weekend: 50+ Weekend Events & Parties + Free Tickets | June 12-14)

thank_you_inner

Huh?  I'm sorry I don't understand.  What are you saying?  Deelay Ceelay?  What the…?

Abstractly it is a merry blend of tune, percussion, color, and light synthesized into danceable intellectual melody; a fuzzy rocket scientist.  The more literal explanation is it's a band name that represents a playful rendition off the names of its two members, Delaney Kelly and Chris Lael Larson.

Part live and part electronically pre-recorded (synched with a projected experimental video experience) tonight's Deelay Ceelay show at Backspace will impress even the most jaded self-proclaimed music connoisseurs.   Do not expect to see or hear the typical live set. All I am going to say is Delaney and Chris both play drum kits on stage.  Their sound resonates a calm complexity full of rich enthusiasm that unites audience with instrumentation.  In other words — you will feel it.

You can download their EP here.

An added bonus is that t Read the rest of this entry »

How to Give a Beating in Skates and Spandex: the Countdown to PDX Roller Derby Victory

Rose City rollers, portland derby

Last Saturday I joined my fellow Portland-Derby goers in the huge warehouse practice space, called "The Hanger" at Oaks Park Roller Skating Rink. The stadium was packed to capacity, bodies spilling off the few benches and crammed together on the floor (in designated areas, of course). Roller derby conjured images of Mad-Max battle cages, and having never seen a bout before, I expected a few of the derby girls to come out in chain mail and leather and battle to the death in an iron dome. Instead, the ladies came bursting into the rink, dressed in an explosion of Lycra, glitter, purple tights, and imposing body padding (some of which looked suspiciously like armor). When the glitter settled, the players stood proud atop their multicolored skate wheels, in fierce display of determination and ruthlessness.

As luck would have it, the only person in the world who Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Weekend EventsThings I'm currently jocking…

Weekend events… It's Pride and Pedalpalooza Weekend. So many things to do. Drag Races, Bike Races, Drag Performances, Bike Dancing, Dance Parties, Boat Rides, Block Parties, Naked Parties, Naked Rides and Nakedness in general.

Free music ish… A free remix album from Mad Decent's Toy Selectah – http://www.maddecent.com/mp3/toyselectah_MexMoreLP.zip and a new club mix from DJ Marvel – http://www.instinctdjs.com/mp3/djmarvel/No_Requests_Vol_3.mp3

DIY Events… So many fashion shows this month!! Explode La Mode and PDX Collections this weekend, the A.I, Silhouette Fashion Show, Zita Hollywood Fashion Show, the Create Clothing Trunk Show and the Pets Get This Fashion Show next weekend and at the end of the month is Massive #8. But perhaps the best DIY event in PDX right now is the weekly music gathering of musicians at Tony Ozier's Wednesday night party ‘The Doo Doo Jam.' It's at Club Calabash, it's free and it's pretty much what every person needs in their life — a little bit of funk and a whole lot of soul. I'll be there next week. Maybe I'll see you there too.

Life is a party, everyone is just waiting to be invited.
