Where To Watch USA vs Brazil (Confederations Cup Final!) in Portland | June 28

USA Soccer, Confederations Cup Ideas, PortlandThis is a big one. USA vs Brazil. According to Mr. Wetzel at Yahoo Sports, this is the “most important game in U.S. soccer history“. From his article:

“Make no mistake about this, though, if the U.S. can defeat Brazil on Sunday for the Confederations Cup title, it will be the most important moment for soccer in this country ever.” Read more here

There are many places to watch huge moment in USA sports history in Portland, and here are some tips and my favorites.

Tanker Bar, 4825 SE Hawthorne

This has become one of my favorite bars to watch sports in Portland. Tim (owner) has done a fantastic job making this a nice place. I just called him and he said some great things about watching the the game there tomorrow. Sunday is all-day happy hour there meaning $1 off wells, $1 off micros (and they have a bunch of good ones) and food specials. He also said they just got in a newly release Session Black beer. Did I mention they have Buck Hunter?!! Doors open at 10AM.

Superfest @ Rotture: Yacht, Panther, Starfucker, More… | June 27, 28

Its all-ages electro-madness weekend here in Portland. Superfest starts today at Roturre with a line-up of local acts that will draw fans out in droves. It all begins at 4pm this afternoon with bands such as Panther and Yacht, two of my personal favorites due to the astute creativity seen in both their presentation and approach to the business of music.

Check out these music videos and you will see what I mean.

and

Yes, they live HERE.

That all aside, Superfest will simply be excellent fun with lots of people dancing! What more can you ask for? Okay so are you still hesitant? In addition to hosting some outstanding music festivals, Roturre is a well-designed venue with a pretty damn good sound system. Not too long ago, they pulled off a successful-sounding set for Japanther, which speaks volumes due to their complicated sound set ups.

Once you're done with Saturday, you can return on Sunday at 6pm to see Starfucker, Mattress, and Explode Into Colors – and its only $15 for a two day pass.

Very. Cool.

North American Organic Brewers Festival @ Overlook Park | June 27

Beginning on Friday, hundreds of Portlanders will flock to Overlook Park to participate in an annual celebration of organic beer and sustainability. Two of Portland's hottest industries, united at last thanks to the North American Organic Brewers Festival (NAOBF). All beer is brewed from organic ingredients, and imported from all over the world, from Belgium to Germany and naturally, the Northwest.

In the name of sustainability, the NAOBF aims to be car-free, instead encouraging attendees to bike in and offering admission discounts to Read the rest of this entry »

The Floating World Animation Fest 2009 is Tonight! | June 25

The Floating World Animation Fest 2009 is Tonight!

floating world animation festival at holocene Watch this, then we'll talk….

Not satisfied with being a truly freaking awesome comic shop, Floating World Comics presents (for the third year running) a carefully curated program of short animation that promises to range from the experimental to the plainly mental. A highlight of the program is David O'Reilly's beautiful and strange Please Say Something, winner of the prestigious Golden Bear award for best short this year in Berlin. Remember Octocat? Yup, same dude. But this film feels more like Jimmy Corrigan, Smartest Kid on Earth meets Blade Runner to surprisingly touching effect.

Here's a challenge: this is a direct link to Read the rest of this entry »

Josh Whedon's Serenity @ Cinema 21 | June 27

Serenity Now!!

Posted by Stephanie El-Hajj

June 27, 2009 – Portland's seen its serenity portland, cinema 21fair share of crazy fans, but crazy fans supporting a great cause? Now that's novel. "Can't Stop the Serenity" is brought to you by Portland's own PDX Browncoats, a group of local fanatics dedicated to keeping the much loved, but short-lived Sci-fi show "Firefly" alive through annual charity screenings of the movie Serenity.

Since its inception in 2006, the Portland Serenity screening has raised over $28,000 for Equality Now, Joss Whedon's favored charity. And I say Portland because this charity screening is big, supported and duplicated by Firefly fans across the nation.

This year's celebration of Serenity differs from previous years, in that there are two screenings. The first is for tamer fans, those new to the series, and fans who wish to see Serenity in it's untarnished glory on the big screen. The second screening is for fans with a little Read the rest of this entry »
