This is all a complete sham.
Women are there but they don't enter in to the spirit of the occasion. They wear knickers if not full bikinis with a small number of exceptions. I wish people would call this event what it is naked men day or better Amnesty for flashers to expose themselves to children day.

This is about nudists (not naturists) hijacking environmental issues to mainstream nudity with some idiot men falling for it. But I suppose you're not real man if you don't expose yourself to children.

Bike-riders be blessed. May our consciousness ride all waves of good change.

Regarding Forrester McLeod's great comment above: "Better bare than burka," a woman at CA's Venice Beach once said, in homage to her small bikini (while a visiting Islamic family had father and son cavorting in the waves and shrouded mom on the sand, waving only with her cloth-covered arms). Images and archives on related gender topics at http://thelongestwar.wordpress.com/ Forrester also states a very good point, in that we're no longer tribal and so innocent in general (but with this global economy, maybe we're ultimately headed back to tribal ways --- it could be the silver lining).

This resonates as a great truth to me from Forrester, along with my hopes that the tribal vibe was what the Portland naked riders felt and kept:
"... there was a beach here in Los Angeles that we used to go nude on all the time. ... Felt very tribal and innocent. Families would walk by and smile and wave. Somewhere along the line the perverts showed up. The vibe took a gargantuous U-turn. ... it started feeling gross and dirty and heinous."

We don't need to sexualize and objectify the body (a cultural practice that inures disproportionately to harm women), but we also don't need modesty head-scarf and burka codes for women only. Ride on, modern tribalists.

Hey! That's SO great! How liberating that must have been! I'm not a nudist by any means but there was a beach here in Los Angeles that we used to go nude on all the time. I realize you guys were making a political statement on your ride! We were just indulging in feeling the sun everywhere and skinny-dipping in the ocean, but your sentences "Without exception, there was total respect of each other and the respect went both ways." and " Most families waved and cheered us on." sent me back in time. It was the same with us. Felt very tribal and innocent. Families would walk by and smile and wave. Somewhere along the line the perverts showed up. The vibe took a gargantuous U-turn. I don't know why...but it started feeling gross and dirty and heinous. You couldn't pay me to go nude on a beach these days. Not in CA anyway.

It was fantastic to hear that so many people could have the experience you had!!! You made me smile big. I hope it helped the cause, even if it didn't......all the joy you guys spread must be like a shot of vitamin 'B' for the planet!

Bon Voyage...
