Bridging Technology and Community
What happens when the vibrant Portland technology community decides that having at least one event happening on most nights the week* just isn't enough? They put together their own conference of course!
Open Source Bridge is an entirely volunteer run, not-for-profit conference happening June 17-19 at the Oregon Convention Center. This event is being put on by developers as an offering to the Open Source technology community. It seeks to strengthen open source community by bridging language, technology, backgrounds and projects. Topics dive deep into hardware hacking, emerging functional languages, and web scalability. There are also talks for newbies – whether for hobbyists, technology professionals or educators. Â There's even an entire track dedicated to the business of open source — how to use it, as well as how to make money off it.
The main conference sessions are scheduled to run June 17 and 18 from 9AM to 7PM. Sessions are split across five tracks and are divided under the categories:Â Business, Chemistry, Cooking, Culture and Hacks. A sample of the sessions includes topics like: Open Source Tools for Freelancers, New Ways for Teaching Children Software Programming, A Practical Tutorial on How the Web Works, Ask Forgiveness Not Permission, and Making Twitter Suck Less with Perl. The full schedule of sessions is available on the Open Source Bridge website.
Friday, June 19th will feature “Unconference” sessions from 9AM to 3:50PM. Friday's time provides a forum for conference attendees to collaborate and discuss ideas from previous day's presentations. The Friday session times are opened up to all conference participants. Details on participating in the Unconference sessions are on the Open Source Bridge Wiki.
If 10 hours of sessions isn't enough there is space available for conference participants to hold informal, “Birds of a Feather” sessions from 7PM to 10PM on the 17th and 18th. The conference will also feature two Hacker Lounges, one during the day at the Oregon Convention Center, and another 24-hour lounge located at the conference hotel, the Hilton Portland on SW Sixth Avenue, downtown.
