Run away to the circus with Sideshow Speakeasy

Step right up folks, because Wednesday evening at Wanderland Circus Presents Sideshow Speakeasy @ Dante's | June 10Dante's the colorful characters at Wanderlust Circus will present Sideshow Speakeasy, an evening of acrobatics, tattooed ladies, contortionists and musical freaks, all for $5.

Hosted by the venerable William Batty and Nic the Creature, the show will feature the musical and burlesque talents of Tana, the Tattooed Lady, tumblers The Mighty Mighty Acrobats, comedian Tommy Twimble (last seen as the Dormouse in Wanderlust's Wonderland Circus) and musical guests Between Ravens and Crows, among other clowns, musicians and creatures of the night.

Arrive early at 8 p.m. to participate in an Amateur Hour Talent Contest, where attendees can show off their circus skills. Its the perfect opportunity to showcase that juggling routine you've been practicing at home alone. With your cat.

At 9 p.m., The Hop-Frog Band will play a set, followed by the main variety show at 10 p.m. If you're looking for something to do on a Wednesday night, I don't think it gets anymore eclectic than this. Read the rest of this entry »

PDX Music in the Schools is hosting its third annual benefit concert on Thursday, June 11th at Cleveland High School. This event, organized by students from across the Portland Public School District, raises money for the music programs in each one of the PPS high schools.

In this time of budget cuts and economic uncertainty, raising money for the arts becomes especially important. As students, we believe that music plays an important role in our high school education and want to make sure it survives in the years to come.

Portland Open Source Conference | June 17-19

open source bridgeWhat happens when the vibrant Portland technology community decides that having at least one event happening on most nights the week* just isn't enough? They put together their own conference of course!

Open Source Bridge is an entirely volunteer run, not-for-profit conference happening June 17-19 at the Oregon Convention Center. This event is being put on by developers as an offering to the Open Source technology community. It seeks to strengthen open source community by bridging language, technology, backgrounds and projects. Topics dive deep into hardware hacking, emerging functional languages, and web scalability. There are also talks for newbies – whether for hobbyists, technology professionals or educators.  There's even an entire track dedicated to the business of open source — how to use it, as well as how to make money off it.
