“I ain't tryin to diss but I don't be tryin to f*** with Limp Bizkit. When I get down in my zone, I be rockin Bad Brains and Fishbone. I ain't tryin to slow your groove, but that ain't the way I'm tryin to move. I don't turn on Korn to get it on; I be playin Jimi Hendrix 'til the dawn” (lyrics from “Rock N Roll”)

Mos Def is much more than a hip hop artist. He garners Grammy, Emmy Mos Def at Roseland in Portland& Golden Globe nominations. He's considered a voice of truth & consciousnesses for many young people around this country (even if he was a bit crazy on Bill Maher). It has been over three years since Mos Def has released a new album and ten years since the ground-breaking debut, Black On Both Sides.

This is why you should be at this show: His new album, The Ecstatic, is scheduled for release in June and he's playing new tracks from it on this tour. People who've seen him perform are saying it is some of the best music Mos has ever produced. You can download one of the tracks, Casa Bey here and decide for yourself.

With his ever growing acting career, who knows how long it will be before he releases another album and comes back to the PDX? I wouldn't miss this opportunity if I were you. We'll even give you a chance to go for free… Read the rest of this entry »

Playwrite Performance @ World Trade Center Theater | May 18

Posted by Samantha Herman

If any city can appreciate the creative, youthful Playwrite, Portland, Oregonminds, it's the city of Portland. Our liberal arts degrees and our cravings for unadulterated, undiscovered talent make us the ideal audience for the student writers at PlayWrite, an organization that encourages youth from all around the city to find their voices. And these are some mighty powerful voices that will become reality, thanks to a group of professional actors.

Open Meadow Middle School student Latifah Denton is only 14, but the themes in her seven-minute play prove that she is wise beyond her years. “My play is about a Venus fly trap and a jack-o-lantern Read the rest of this entry »

Manchester Orchestra @ Hawthorne Theatre | May 17

(Related: 75+ Weekend Events in Portland + Free Tickets | May 14-17)

Atlanta-based Manchester Orchestra's Manchester Orchesta at Hawthorne theater jpgrecently released 2nd full-length album, Mean Everything to Nothing, and has been on an intense year of touring with talented and well-respected bands such as Kings of Leon, Brand New, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Say Anything, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Manchester Orchestra should perform most – if not all – of “Mean Everything to Nothing” at the Hawthorne Theater on Sunday. It's the kind of album that is easy to adore upon the first listen. The first 6 tracks vary from the fun and poppy opening song “The Only One,” to energetic and aggressively charged “Shake it Out to the serious, and at times chilling, “Pride”.

In their bio, the band's frontman (lead vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist Andy Hull)  explains  that the structure and pacing of the album was extremely deliberate. “I like the fact that there is no chance during the first six songs to say anything if you're listening to it with somebody. It's seamless. We did that to emphasize that there are two halves to the album.”

Because they are super-awesome, they have made almost all of their songs available Read the rest of this entry »

(Click here for info on the BEST Portland Restaurants, Bars, Food, Drinks & More)

We are near the end of Portland Food week Twitter Question- Best Pizza in Portlandon the Pipeline (there will be a another in June). So far we have found the top Portland Thai restaurants & Indian food. Food Carts & breakfasts are coming shortly.

On Thursday, we tackled a subject that East Coasters and Chicagoans often complain about when they move or visit here–our supposed inferior pizza. So, we once again asked the Portland Twitter community and some facebook friends their thoughts.

There are a lot of replies below, but the winners appear to be (did not count, so I might be a bit off): Apizza Scholls, Ken's Artisan, Escape From New York, Vicente's and the much loved Flying Pie.

Rocking the Piano with Ben Folds @ Roseland | May 15

The Fine Art of Piano Dancing: Ben Folds returns to Portland

You have to love a man with a piano. Like Ben Folds comes to Portland @ Roseland, May 15Elton John and Billy Joel before him, watching Ben Folds rock out on a piano is a spectacle to behold. And the ability to dance while playing the piano doesn't come easily. Trust me.

The last time I saw Ben was during high school, when black frame glasses and wool sweaters were all the rage (though they continue to be in Portland today). He lost the Five in 1999, produced the theatrical-piano-rock album Rockin' the Suburbs in 2001, and in recent years became the first person to broadcast a live concert over Myspace, released an album of acappella arrangements of his music featuring the country's best college vocal troupes and produced a new album, Way to Normal in 2008.

From Leigh Feldman:
Portland Weekend EventsThings I'm currently jocking…

1) Partnerships… The good people that host the dance party Electric Feel (Saturday night @ the Fez Ballroom) are offering FREE entry to anyone that comes to the door before 11pm and says ‘LifeisaParty.' Townbombing (Friday Night @ Tube) is offering $1 High Life's for anyone that comes and takes their shirt off, err, says ‘LifeisaParty' when ordering their drinks … with their shirt off.

2) This mix by local dj/producer/record collector Rev. Shines. I'll let it speak for itself, but it's definitely a toast to the boogie… http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?nwjmazjz4mi

3) Upcoming events… I'm definitely looking forward to Massive on May 30th, but next weekend is a big one! Flosstradamus, Mos Def, Amanda Blank, Glitch Mob, Urban Golf, more fashion shows, an anime festival and perhaps the craziest one of them all… A Memorial Day Weekend Cruise/Boat Party with the DJ for the Portland Trailblazers! For info on this and how to get tix call 503.839.1738.

Life is a party, everyone is just waiting to be invited.

The BEST Thai Food & Restaurants in Portland | 25+ Suggestions

(Click here for info on the BEST Portland Restaurants, Bars, Food, Drinks & More)

It's food week on PDX Pipeline. On Tuesday, we answered the question of where to find the best Indian food in Portland. We are also looking for the best Pizza in Portland today on twitter. If you've lived in Portland for any amount of time, you know that saying “The best Thai restaurant in Portland” will nearly always lead to an argument. Because of this, I always say  “the second best Thai restaurant in Portland is“. It's clean living people.

Anyway, there are many, many answers from twitter and Facebook of where the best Thai food in Portland can be found. I didn't count them all, but at least 40 replies/suggestions and 20 or so different restaurants. The top thai restaurants in Portland (or most recommended) seem to be Baan Thai by PSU, E san, and my personal favorite– Pad Thai Kitchen on SE Belmont. There are several mentioned below that I haven't tried yet though, so it's time for a Thai expedition.
