Big Business, May 23 @ Dante's

Okay Portland this is your weekend to get your heaviness on!

Tonight for $10, The Melvins' protégé band (this is debatable), Big Business (website), rocks Dante's at 9:00 PM.  They are playing their latest weighty release, ‘Mind the Drift' which is layered with rich sound and deep barrel-like drumming.  Influence from The Melvins is apparent, but Big Business has their own their personality you need to feel in person to gain a full appreciation for.  Stand next to the speakers and you will get what that means.

The Melvins, May 24 @ Roseland

Then tomorrow night $20 will get you into The Roseland to witness what promises to be an unforgettable live performance by The Melvins (myspace). Not only are they one of the best rock bands to ever exist, but they are also said to be playing two sets. Rumored: One with their 1983 line up, includes THE Joe Preston, and another playing their most famous LP, which was co-produced by Kurt Cobain in 1993, called ‘Houdini'.

‘Houdini' is nothing less than historical, Read the rest of this entry »

Every so often — by chance of magic, miracle, or Wordstock book to film, portlanda special holiday — we are presented with the opportunity to see some of greatest classic films on the big screen. The wonderful people behind the Wordstock Film Festival — Portland's annual festival of books, writers, and storytelling — have teamed up with McMenamins to present the 1st Wordstock Book-to-Film Festival. This unique festival is the perfect event for all the local philologists and cinephiles to gather together and watch these films screened as they were made to be screened.

The festival's films span across a variety of genres and time periods. The films are being screened at 3 McMenamins locations across town (NW, NE and SE).

Tickets for all films and show times are the very low price of $3 per person and the proceeds will be used to support the Wordstock 2009, taking place October 8-11 at the Oregon Convention Center. Watch PDX Pipeline in October for information about the literary festival and check out their website at wordstockfestival.com. Read the rest of this entry »

How many people would say they enjoyed being a M83, hawthorne theater, portlandteenager? We look back and remember feeling awkward, highly emotional, and pressured to cultivate a unique identity for ourselves — stuck in that confusing place between childhood and adulthood. But if you think about it, those same years were some of the greatest years of our life; a time when we were free to explore the world at our leisure, make a lot of mistakes, and encouraged to focus almost entirely on our own goals and desires. It is this idea of nostalgia and appreciation for one's youth that embodies M83's music, most prominent in the band's most recent album "Saturdays=Youth."

Once a two-man band, M83 now consists entirely of Read the rest of this entry »

PDXPipeline on TwitterIf you tell me you don't like Twitter — I'll look you right in the face [probably a bit too closely] and say "Give it time."  If you're a Twattict (Twitter addict — yeah, I made it up) like myself and the other PDXPipeline crew members, then you'll love this event.

Tomorrow night, at the Green Dragon, a dramatic Twitter reading will commence — titled What The Shit. This will be an event that allows us all to finally connect faces to at-signs and hashtag trends. We all have literary, Twitterverse and knitting Queen, Melissa Lion, to thank for the organizing.

The following information is from the What The Shit information page: Read the rest of this entry »

June Naked Insanity: Bike Rides & Runs

Mark your calendar, get your bike in good shape, and make sure Wold Naked Bike Ride, Portland, Oregon: photo by Jonathan Mausyour seat is comfy.  The 6th annual World Naked Bike Ride is coming up on the 13th of June, 2009.  Every year, people across the globe gather together in their respective cities to ride naked.  The reason? To protest oil dependencies and demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists on the road, as well as, well, just to be naked.  Last year attendance was estimated at over 2000 naked Portlanders.  For an idea of how last year's event went, as well as pictures, check Jonathan Maus' article.

As if the original WNBR wasn't enough naked fun for you, there's the WNBR Sunny Nekkid Ride, on June 13th, as well as  the Fig Leif Naked 5k Run and 10k Off-Road Naked Bike Ride on June 13th. For those that can't make it or want to see what it's all about beforehand, the Fig Leif Naked 5k Run will have an “undress rehearsal” on June 6th.

Update from the Whiffies fried pie cart on SE Hawthorne & 12 (twitter account): I'm giving 50 free pies to the first 50 nude cyclists and Potato Champion is giving 50 free small cones. Must have a bike and be with the ride.

The Top Coffee Shops in Portland: NW, NE, SW, SE, North

We all know that Portland has the best coffee shop scene in Stumptown Coffee @ New Seasons, Portland, Oregonthe country, regardless of the invasion from the mega-company of our northern neighbor. Being a Portland barista is not a job, it is a long-term profession for thousands & a right of passion for tens of thousands more.

Last week we answered many of your food questions such as the best Portland breakfasts, Thai Restaurants, Indian food and pizza.

This week, we are tackling where Portland drinks on PDX Pipeline. On day one, we've asked our twitter and Facebook friends one of the most important questions most people have to answer when moving here:

What is your favorite coffee shop and why?

And we received a lot of  answers. The thing is, there are MANY fantastic coffee shops in Portland and the one people settle on as favorites often has as much to do with location as quality, people, and comfort. That is one of the great things about this list below.

There are picks for SE, NE, North, SW, the Pearl, Nob Hill, Downtown, Gresham, Beaverton, and even Aloha! Wherever you live in Portland or are thinking about moving, there is a recommendation for you (maybe not St. John's…sorry for you). So, without further ado…
