Music:'Does Anyone Have a Gun?”–Bob of Tribes

The Brew came through once again with a nice Portland video. Here is more info from BikePortland.org about the Zoobomb “pyle”:

As we reported back in October 2007, the Zoobombers worked with Mayor Sam Adams (then Commissioner of Transportation), the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) and the Bureau of Transportation to secure a $10,000 grant for the project.

The new rack will be an officially recognized and sanctioned work of public art. Continue reading…

Also, it appears that more Zoobomb-type bike pyles are now also in SE Portland as I definitely spotted one on SE Hawthorne and 17th or so. Anyone else see new pyles around town. Are people Taborbombing SE now?

Massive Dance Party @ Crown Room |

(Related: 75+ Portland Weekend Events & Parties + Free Tickets | May 28-31)

It's the last Saturday of May, and that means it's MASSIVE time. Massive is a monthly dance party at the Crown Room. I attended the last two parties, and they were packed with beautiful people doing what they do–partying. The was before summer hit Portland, and I don't know if you've noticed or not, but hotness is all around us…both in temps and in people. That can only mean an even larger, hotter, sexier, dancier, crazier MASSIVE.

Isaac Hayes is TRUCK TURNER @ Hollywood Theater | May 30

There are a ton of great events tomorrow. View many, many here. Regardless, it is hard to pass this up. Look at that poster and read the description. Genius. I want to watch this movie every day for the next year. The “greatest pimp funeral in movie history“?!! Boom. I'm there.

From Dan/Grindhouse Film Fest:
Grindhouse Film Festival. Portland, OregonThis Saturday only at 7pm at the Hollywood Theatre, The Grindhouse Film Festival presents the blacksploitation classic TRUCK TURNER!  A tribute to the recently deceased Isaac Hayes!  Watch the trailer here: shaolinslums.blogspot.com/2009/05/truck-turner.html

TRUCK TURNER (1974) The great Isaac Hayes stars as bounty hunter Mac “Truck” Turner.  When he's not making the ladies swoon, he's busting cons who skip bail.  He's out to catch a pimp named Gator, but along the way he stirs up all kinds of trouble with the seedy 70's underworld.

A price is put on Truck's head: a stable of ho's is the prize for killing him. Yaphet Kotto plays a ruthless pimp out to collect, and Truck is Read the rest of this entry »

Cat ladies and crumbling mansions at PCS's Grey Gardens: The Musical

I often imagine that I am fated to die an eccentric old3523053095_87a4821194 woman in a faux-leopard print coat at a decaying mansion somewhere, overrun with cats.

That's why my curiosity was piqued when I heard that Portland Center Stage was putting on a musical production of Grey Gardens, based upon a 1973 documentary about Big and Little Edie Bouvier Beale, the aunt and cousin of the late Jackie Kennedy. Once socialites, the aunt and cousin of Mrs. Kennedy drew notoriety when the East Hampton Health Department tried to condemn their decaying 28-room beach house, where the two women had been living in filth and disrepair with over 160 cats…and raccoons to boot.

The fantastical story of these two women is sure to be made all the more odd with the addition of music, for which the musical was nominated for a Tony.

From Portland Center Stage:

Composer Scott Frankel approached playwright Doug Wright (Pulitzer Prize winning author of I Am My Own Wife) with the idea to Read the rest of this entry »

Rose Festival's Starlight Parade: Do You Love It?

The Starlight Parade is one of the MANY Portland weekend events we just posted on Pipeline. Here is the info from the Rose Festival site:

More Than a Century of
Illumination!Starlight Parade, Portland

Did you know that an illuminated parade has been a part of the Portland Rose Festival since its early years? In 1907, “red fire” lit up the night as the fire department paraded along Yamhill street. The following year, more than 20 floats “brilliantly illuminated with electric lights and torches” came together to celebrate “The Spirit of the West” during the night-time parade.

You can of course watch it on KGW as well starting at 8:30 on Saturday. I asked our twitter friends (over 4,000 now!) what they think of the parade and those answers are after the break. Feel free to add your thoughts in the comments… Read the rest of this entry »

Go to the site and type in the word “MONSTER” at checkout or call 503.236.7542 to schedule a shopping appointment at their closed-door store.

2) Free music ish… Cousin Cole's ‘Major Rager' Mix. It's the B-more electro club mix made for his European tour. It's heavy on the bass, but definitely a booty pop party starter — http://www.zshare.net/audio/572137862fe51f38/ … Damu the Fudgemunk's Same Beat EP. It's perfect for the summer barbq party — http://www.mediafire.com/?mkwdeaykdmk … DJ Jayceeoh's Pop Models Mix — http://www.zshare.net/audio/60185037c894ccca/ … If these doesn't get you excited for this weekend I don't know what to say.

QDoc 2009: Portland Queer Documentary Film Fest | May 28-31

Posted by Kimberly Gehl

The number one reason to attend QDoc – the Portland Queer Documentary Film Fest – is because this is the only festival in the United States – and only 1 of 2 in the world – that presents a strong line-up of indie documentaries that discuss some of the most important and thought-provoking issues currently facing the queer community. Many cities host LGBT film festivals, but QDoc is unique in that it is focused purely on documentaries, with a mission to encourage viewers to think more seriously about the core issues of queer identity – politics, history, culture, family, aging, coming out, HIV and AIDS, queer diversity, and sexuality.

What you will find after viewing these films is that queer issues are not exclusive to the queer community - matters such as Read the rest of this entry »

FILMUSIK @ Hollywood Theater: Plan 9 From Outer Space | May 27, 29

Yeah, this is going to be pretty awesome. I am on the coast and yet I am up at midnight posting this b/c I forgot to before I left. I don't want you to miss out & I don't want to quit beach bumming, so I will let Galen take it from here…

From Galen/Director – Filmusik
Hey there,  I wanted to send a note about our film + music performances next Wednesday and Friday.  It's going to be a really good time,  their are some really great musicians and voice actors performing and the film itself is an absolute classic, not Casablanca classic, a different much more Ed Wood kind of classic. Here's the info about it:

FILMUSIK: Plan 9 From Outer Space
Filmusik at Hollywood Theater

On the 27th and 29th, teams of musicians, composers, voice actors and sound designers are congregating in the pit at the Hollywood Theatre to premiere a new soundtrack to Ed Wood's botched masterpiece of sci-fi cinema: Plan 9 From Outer Space.

The original strings + electronica score is performed live to the film by the Classical Revolution PDX string quartet and Sugar Short Wave. The film is dubbed in the pit by a cast of voice actors from the Willamette Radio Workshop with sound effects and foley by Heather Perkins.

Vampires, UFOs and purple pajama-wearing Aliens loom on the screen as the musicians bow, pluck and pound away furiously at the collaborative composition of Portland based composers Galen Huckins and Sugar Shortwave.  Our restored and colorized print of the film provided courtesy of Legend Films.  Filmusik promotes live performance over Read the rest of this entry »

The Best Last Thursday Show of May: City of Night @ Goodfoot Lounge

I know that I've given top props to the Goodfoot's Last Thursday before.
I know that I've written this will be the top art opening of day before.
I know that I was right.

On Thursday, I will be right again. There are a lot of great artists coming through this venue, but this show…THIS ONE not only has two great artists, but one is the art curator of Goodfoot and the other is freaking Haberman. Do you know what happens with this combo? Super ambitions project & a BIG PARTY. That is what is happens.

There is a 30 foot, 3Dwoodcut, hand-painted” Portland! Look at that picture below. That is just one section…ONE! Thursday's weather makes it nearly impossible to pass up time on Alberta. At 9, when the sun goes down, drive/ride/bike/bus/fly/walk down to SE for this.

From Goodfoot Lounge:
last thursday at the goodfoot lounge, portlandCITY OF NIGHT
A collaborated art project by Jason Brown and Chris Haberman

Complete with dense urban landscapes filled with clusters of city folk to musicians tucked under industrial bridges within massive underground cities of lore,  City of Night is a multi-dimensional art show, featuring paintings and a 3D installation, exploring the true essence of all forms of “night” life and the duality of the human condition.
Based off pop culture and real-life experience, this varied concept show is a whirlwind of visual, textual and collaborated works from two of Portland's most prolific and colorful artists.

THE CITY OF NIGHT INSTALLATION:
Spanning 30 feet of wall space, this woodcut hand-painted city is a lighted construct of the urban experience, complete with three-dimensional buildings, bridges, sky lights, houses, bar scenes and thousands of people.  It is Read the rest of this entry »
