Portland Theater Review: Grease at Keller Auditorium

Posted by Samantha Herman

So when was the last time that you did the Hand-Jive? The lady two rows in front of me did it last night at approximately 8:45, and I can vouch for her. I believe that her impromptu dance session speaks volumes about how enthusiastic and lively the cast of Grease was at the Keller Auditorium on this warm spring evening. Danny Zuko (Eric Schneider) has never been so cool, Sandy (Emily Padgett) has never been so innocent, Kenickie (David Ruffin) has never been so horny, and the end of the school year has never been so sexy.

Granted, the plot line for Grease has always been fairly tame, with little in the way of unexpected twists or unnerving crimes. But it serves as a good reminder of how innocuous teenagers really are. The peer pressure, the tiffs, the mistakes - all will be overcome in due time and everyone will walk away unscathed. Perhaps we weren't all wearing bobby socks and ducktails in high school, but the message applies regardless of the changing fashions. Read the rest of this entry »

2008 Bridgetown Comedy Festival Highlights, Part 5
Portland, Oregon

Description:

More of the best of the first year of Portland's Bridgetown Comedy Festival, featuring Patton Oswalt, Scott Moran, Tig Notaro, Chris Fairbanks, Kyle Kinane, James Adomian and Dax Jordan. The second annual festival is starting on April 23rd, featuring Janeane Garofalo, David Koechner, Neil Flynn, Brendon Small and over 150 other comedians from around the country. Get your passes now!

The video up there is probably NSFW for most people's work. So watch it at home, over and over.

I saw Bridgetown Comedy Fest co-creator Andy Wood yesterday for about 3 minutes. He received 5 calls during those 3 minutes. We spoke 20 seconds…maybe. His facebook status at 2:12PM yesterday read “is starting to lose it.” This festival is huge. There are over 150 acts during the 4 days. I have no idea how many of those are from out of town and flying/driving in, but I am going with more than 50. That's a lot of work for our city and reward Andy's mental collapse by buying some tickets to the event.

Playoffs Preview: Game Two | Portland Trail Blazers vs Houston Rockets

Game 2: Blazers vs Rockets Redux

Many experts (the talking heads you see on tWWL) Playoffs Game One: Portland Trail Blazers vs Houston Rocketssay that if you're going to lose, getting blown out is the best way to do it. With a rout, it's easier for the team to relinquish the loss and move on. Whereas with a nail biter, individuals are more likely to dwell on certain instances throughout the game that could have changed the outcome.

Based on everything I've read over the past 2 days about the Blazers and their current psyche, the experts' theory rings true. The Blazers are eager to get out on the court tonight. They want to get back to playing basketball at the level we all know that they can.

The loss has put the Blazers in a hole. Instead of winning 4 of 7 against the Rockets, they're now in a position where they must win 4 of the next 6 games to advance. A daunting task against a much more experienced Rockets team. It's not impossible. If the Blazers can get back to the way they were playing a week ago; if the supporting cast can shed their nerves and recapture the confidence. The Blazers have all the pieces to get it done.

From a basketball standpoint, they need to do the exact opposite of Read the rest of this entry »

Wednesday night at the Mission Theater, BBackfence Portland -Tiny Meat walletsack Fence PDX will, as usual, provide us with laughs, tears and uncomfortable shifting in our seats.

After a recent article in The Oregonian, and growing following due to word of mouth, the story telling series is achieving its goal: recapturing the simple pleasure of a good story.

No glitz, no action sequences, no airbrushing. Just people standing on a stage telling a story that evokes emotion.

This month's theme? “Fish Out of Water.” Something we can all relate to in one way or another.

As always, the event is hosted by Frayn Masters and Melissa Lion – two of the funniest, sexiest women I know. Storytellers on Wednesday include radio celebrities, educators, activists, improvisers and writers.

After being in attendance at all but the first Back Fence PDX, I can say that no matter what the storyteller's title may be or who you may think they are – their tale always surprises.

If you have been before, come reconnect with regular fans.

If you've never been, stop depriving yourself!

At the show, Tinymeat will give away 25 wallets to the audience. All you have to do is Read the rest of this entry »

Playoffs Recap: Portland Trail Blazers vs Houston Rockets | Game One

Posted by Andy Popp

(For more playoff coverage: 2009 NBA Playoff Coverage: Portland Trail Blazers )

Blazers vs Rockets — (Aaron) Brooks was here.

Last night the Rockets welcomed the Blazers to the Playoffs Game One: Portland Trail Blazers vs Houston Rocketsplayoffs in an embarrassing fashion. The Rockets hit the ground running, going to Yao Ming early and often. As a team, the Rockets shot close to 75% from the field in the first quarter and 58% for the game. No NBA team is going to lose shooting like that. The Blazers (read: Brandon Roy) did enough hang around early, but the Rockets never let up. Silencing the raucous crowd that was ready to explode; waiting for one of the Blazers' trademark comebacks that never came.

The headliner last night was Aaron Brooks, who did whatever he wanted. Much has been made of his presuming comments from a few weeks ago when he claimed that the Blazers were favorable first round match up for the Rockets. Based on last night, Brooks was right. He backed up his statement and then some. Torching the Blazers, going 5-8 from three for 27 points, 7 assists and only two turnovers in 35 minutes.

The Rockets' front court also gave the Blazers fits on both sides of the ball. Defensively, the Blazers had no answer for Ming, who had his way with Joel Przybilla, Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge.  Luis Scola stopped Aldridge in his tracks, holding him to only 7 points on 3-12 shooting.

The Rockets also racked up 28 free throw attempts, compared Read the rest of this entry »

17th Annual Jewish Film Festival @ NW Film Center | April 16-26

Posted by Eitan Tsur

Max Minsky and Me started off the 17th Annual Jewish Film Festival with a bang. It was a cute film, filled with humor and a touching story of childhood friendship. I especially enjoyed the occasional imaginative diversions, (much like a stylized dream sequence,) as they added depth to the main character by giving viewers a glimpse inside her world. There are many more films running through next Sunday.
