Bridgetown Comedy Fest Update | April 25

I spent eight or more hours on Thursday amongst the comBridgetown Comedy Festival, Portland, Oregonedy action. I brushed up against Janeane Garofalo (unintentionally, I promise), saw a comedian battle a heckler and storm out of the venue, and took these pictures. It was fantastic.

Just received this message from co-creator Andy Wood about today's/tonight's schedule.

Don't miss Home Movies tonight at Bagdad!

The Bridgetown Comedy Festival is pleased to bring together Home Movies creators and stars Brendon Small, Loren Bouchard, Melissa Galsky and Ron Lynch at Bagdad Theater at 7pm for a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the debut of the groundbreaking show, which was the first program aired on the cult hit Adult Swim block of programming on the Cartoon Network.  The show is only $15 and is all-ages, so if you've got kids cool enough to know what a great show Home Movies was, bring 'em along!

Also, The Sound of Young America Live! is happening at 4:30 today at the Bagdad, with guests Reggie Watts, Blitzen Trapper, Mirah, the 3rd Floor, Nick Kroll and Brian Michael Bendis!  That's all-ages as well, and only $10! Read the rest of this entry »

In conjunction with Photo Lucinda, and Slideluck Potshow, the community is invited to participate in a large potluck and multi-media presentation of both local and national work by fantastic photographers and artists.

Playoff Preview: Portland Trail Blazers vs Houston Rockets | Game 3

Game 3: The Road Test

Tonight we've got pivotal game 3 and there's no shortage of intriguing subplots:

  • How will Ron Artest and Shane Battier rebound from Brandon Roy's Tuesday night clinic?
  • The majority of the Blazers are playing their first road playoff game. Guys not named LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy MUST step up offensively if the the Blazers are going to win tonight. Can they right the ship in a hostile environment?
  • Yao Ming. The Blazer front court shut Yao down Tuesday night. Can they do it again in Yao's building? Unfortunately, this hinges on the refs and how they interpret David Stern's script.
  • The Loss of Dikembe Mutombo. Will Greg Oden be able to capitalize on his size advantage down low? A double-double from Oden goes a long way towards a Blazer win.
  • Is tonight the night Aaron Brooks comes back down to earth? I think so.

In game 2, Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge combined for 69 points. Expect the Rockets to adjust defensively to make sure this doesn't happen again. Read the rest of this entry »

NW Documentary's Homegrown DocFest at Mission Theater | April 24

Posted by Teresa Huarte

I was lucky enough last December to witness the NW Documentary -DocFest fruits of Northwest Documentary's 10-Week Documentary Workshop at the Mission Theater.  I was dazzled by the talent, creativity, and professionalism of the films. It was more than worth the price of the ticket to be able to take in such diverse stories, while eating a falafel and drinking a PBR.  Some memorable stories from the last session include: what it's like to be Apocalipstick of the Rose City Rollers; the story behind Victor, the famous accordion player from the Rheinlander German Restaurant; and the game of Goalball, a competitive sport for the blind.

After signing up for NW Documentary's 10-week course, first time film makers in the can create some amazing films.  But it's not all beginners luck, of course. Much credit is due to the talented plot guidance, interview coaching, and patient technical editing help provided by director Ian McClusky and associate director Julie Gliniany.  The Mission Theater graciously hosts the event and opens their stage to an intimate Q & A after the premieres, where you can learn all of the trials and tribulations of what it's like to make a documentary film.

Playoffs Recap: Portland Trail Blazers vs Houston Rockets | Game 2

The Blazers Just Might Be Who We Thought They Were.

The Blazers couldn't afford to lose last night, Portland Trail Blazers vs. Houston Rocketsgoing back to Houston down 0-2 was not an option. Brandon Roy knew it, and decided early that he'd carry the Blazers to victory. He sliced and diced through two of the NBA's premier back court defenders–Ron Artest and Shane Battier–for 42 points, 7 assists and 0 turnovers.

Roy shot over 50% from the field (15 – 27) and hit 10 of 12 free throws. Roy also found the help he so desperately needed in game one from a likely candidate, LaMarcus Aldrige. Even though Luis Scola still gave Alrdige problems, often forcing him to receive the ball clear out at the three point line. Aldridge emerged from obscurity, putting up 27 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks.

The duo of Aldridge and Roy combined for a blistering 69 points in last night's win. A mark that won't be easy for Roy and Aldridge to replicate in the upcoming games. They're going to need more help from the supporting cast. Luckily the rest of the Blazers showed signs of life, most notably Rudy Fernandez, who hit a big three in the 4th quarter and ended the game with 11 points.

Defensively, the Blazers woke up. In an effort spearheaded by Read the rest of this entry »

Wonderland Circus at Bossanova Ballroom | April 24-May 2

Posted by Nathalie Weinstein

Update: Photos & Review: Wonderland Circus @ Bossanova | May 1, 2

Only one Portland venue this weekend will Wonderland Circus at Bossanova Ballroomhave stilt-walking flowers, a human house of cards and an epic battle between a March Hare and a Jaberwock and that's the Bossanova Ballroom (722 E. Burnside). This Friday, the Bossanova will be transformed into the other side of the looking glass for Wanderlust Circus's new production The Wonderland Circus.

Inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, Wonderland is part circus, part play, part tea party and promises to be a hell of a good time.

I was lucky enough to spend some time yesterday with Wanderlust producers William Batty and Nick the Creature, as well as the rest of the lovely and colorful cast as they fitted costumes and put the finishing touches on their set. Lewis Carroll fans will be happy to know that much of the show's dialogue comes directly from Carroll's stories and all of your favorite characters are represented, including my personal favorite, the Cheshire Cat.

The show has several pricing levels: Peanut gallery tickets ($15 advance, $20 day of show) allow full access to the Bossanova's balconies and bar room but is standing room only. Read the rest of this entry »
