Review: 'El Grito del Bronx' at Miracle Theater

Posted By Nathalie Weinstein

Its 8 o'clock on a Friday night and I'm watching a El Grito Del Bronx at Miracle Theatermurderer pleasure himself in his dimly lit cell, scared out of my wits. It's moments like these that set El Grito del Bronx apart from your average night of theater.

Written by renowned Latina playwright Migdalia Cruz, the play follows Lulu (played by Cristi Miles), a soon-to-be bride who is haunted by memories of her brother, Papo (played by Matthew Dieckman) and her abusive father (played by Stephen Lisk. The departure from the norm comes when we find out that after Papo murders his abusive father, he goes on to become a serial killer who murders 18 people. About to be married to Ed (played by Spencer Conway), Lulu tries to move into the future, but is shackled by the violent memories of her past. Using a small stage with two prison cells as set dressing, the Milagro production was electrifying, violent, sometimes funny and sometimes downright scary.

Papo, played by Matthew Dieckman, makes for a convincing serial killer, pacing his cell like a zoo tiger. The line between the dead and the living is nonexistent in this production. Papo's victims move onto the set in between scene changes, staring him down, and sometimes crowd Papo's tiny cell. Moving back and forth in time and place, the production follows the effect that domestic abuse has on the family, and how that abuse would later ripple into the world at large.

Just got back from hanging out with the Commish, Randy Leonard. We did a little Pipeline interview with him and he showed us some proposals for the Made In Oregon sign. There are two more proposals after the break. I have to say, looks pretty good. Finally, a photo from when they were building/changing the current sign. It is hanging at  Floyd's Old Town.

We'll have the interview for you tomorrow. But here is a preview–Randy had a $5 Tuna footlong ad bowl of soup. Hard-hitting journalism, what you've come to expect from the Pipeline. Read the rest of this entry »
