Spring in Portland: Farmers Market Opens Saturday, March 21

Posted By Julian Chadwick

We already have the Farmers Market opening in the list of Portland Weekend Events, but I wanted to share the info I received in a Facebook message from them. I took this picture at the first day of PSU Farmers Market in 2007, so it might look similar in weather and weather-based clothing. Also, no dogs at the Saturday market beginning this year apparently.

From Leigh Feldman:
Portland SkylineThings I am currently jocking….

Drink specials. The Townbombing party at Tube on Friday night is giving you .50 cents off your drinks if you bring your own re-usable mug. Can't beat that. Plus it's a dope free dance party.

Breakdancing. The b-boys and b-girls will be in full effect at the So Fresh So Clean party on Saturday night at PSU. It's a benefit event for the Oregon Food Bank and it starts early, which means you'll have plenty of time to hit up any birthday shindigs or free parties you have planned for the late night.

This live Stevie Wonder performance that you can download for free. If this recording isn't for you, you are not for me … http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/2009/03/11/stevie-wonder-rainbow-london-013174/.

By Kimberly Gehl

POW Fest, Portland Oregon, Hollywood Theater "As one of the 39 film festivals around the world dedicated to exclusively featuring the work of women film makers, POW Fest hopes to inspire more women to pursue this art form….As a woman filmmaker, I feel there is no better place to be than Portland, with so much talent in our own backyard," says Tara Johnson-Medinger, Executive Director of the Portland Oregon Women's Film Festival. Or POW Fest, as it is affectionately referred to.

Sour Apple Productions, in partnership with Film Action Oregon, officially kicks off its second year of POW this Thursday night with the screening of local director Rebecca Rodriguez's film Coming Up Easy.

This highly praised debut film provides an honest, thoughtful, and intriguing account of a woman coping with a family whose long cycle of abuse has plagued them. In the true nature of the POW Fest, Rodriguez will be present for the screening and available to answer questions of festival attendees. There will be an Opening Reception after Rodriguez' film.

Friday night's screenings will include Taylor Brodsky's Oscar nominated short Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Music Extravaganza: 24/7 at Wieden+Kennedy | March 21,22

Wieden+Kennedy radio is showcasing twenty-four straight hours of music in NW Portland this weekend. Curators Bill Crane and Pink Martini's Thomas Lauderdale have organized the concert to shed light on the fact that we've been in a war in Afghanistan for over seven years. Sadly, even with the new administration, there does not appear to be an end in sight…

Update: Wieden Kennedy 24/7 Concert Pictures

From the press release (website):

“24/7,” it will be a series of 24 dramatic concerts, each starting upon the hour, from 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 21, and continuing through to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 22.

All 24 concerts are free and will take place in the auditorium of the Wieden+Kennedy building, 224 Northwest 13th Avenue, between Davis and Everett Streets, in Portland's Pearl District. Wieden+Kennedy join the performing artists to invite sincerely all area residents of good will to these concerts.

No tickets are required.

Neither a protest nor a memorial, “24/7″ nonetheless is a profound calling by its performers to their fellow citizens to remember that we are a nation at war. The musicians creating 24/7 hope to move their neighbors by their music to “do what must be done” as our city, region, and nation face many challenges. This will be music of encouragement as well as entertainment.

To add to the conviviality of this big occasion, the popular and award-winning restaurant Bluehour, next door to the concert venue, will be open all night and the following day. Restaurateur Bruce Carey and chef de cuisine Kenny Giambalvo are planning a special bar menu just for 24/7 performers and audience members.

Battlestar & Beer? Frak, Yeah! | Bagdad Theater: March 20

By Sherri Montgomery

Battlestar Galatica at Bagdad Theater, Portland, OregonPortland fans of SciFi Channel's popular Battlestar Galatica series have been showing up Friday nights for the past 9 weeks at the McMenamins Bagdad Theater since Battlestar resumed this January. Every week people have braved damn-cold, lousy, wet Portland winter weather, a line stretching around the block to get in, another long line for beer once inside, the vampire series Midnight broadcast while waiting for the latest episode to start, and an endless assault of KFC commercials.

Surprisingly, the fine folks at the Bagdad have had trouble sorting out the logistics of so many people turning out each week.

KUFO has been sponsoring the Friday night showing of Battlestar, sending DJs Cort and Fatboy to host the excitement, threaten beatings if there is any talking, and lead the audience in chanting, “So say we all!” before each show. Local comic & memorabilia shop Things From Another World have also sponsored weekly drawings for show merchandise. This popular event has also seen Mark Verheiden, one of the show's executive producers & writers, and local actress Katee Sackhoff ('Starbuck') show up for post-show Q/A sessions.

This Friday will be the two-hour series finale of BSG and Read the rest of this entry »

Wow. I thought we had wrapped up with the Portland Urban Iditarod coverage until I saw this video from Brewcaster this morning. It's fantastic. Hilarious. Probably NSFW. Brewcaster stopped filming a little before I arrived on the scene with the live-stream. Therefore, you can kind of see most of the action in the resources below.

"Wicked" Continues to Amaze | Keller Auditorium

By Jonathon So

wicked, keller auditorium, portland, oregon

When I walked into the Keller Auditorium for the first time, I was in awe of the magnificent set of "Wicked", waiting patiently for my arrival. The towering stage draws the audience down to the front, inviting you to take a closer look. The stage is just the beginning of the connection the musical has with the audience. Though photography is not allowed, the quick snapshots with cameras and iPhones were taken by audience members who wanted to take a piece of this experience with them.

As the audience settles in, Glinda the Good comes floating down from the ceiling on a cascade of bubbles. She sets the mood for the show as she asks the citizens of Oz, "It's good to see me, isn't it?"

For the next two and a half hours, the show cast a spell over the audience as the stories of Glinda the Good and her "evil" counterpart, Elphaba (the future Wicked Witch of the West) unfold. Their friendship grows, their lives connected – leading them toward two very different destinies. Within the pop music and catchy lyrics, hides a very clever message about love, politics and revolutionary ideas. From teenage girls Read the rest of this entry »
