Frank Zappa Party at Fez Ballroom | Dingo The Clown | March 26

Still looking for a good event to kick off your weekend? I've never seen Dingo The Clown perform and this definitely has my curiosity peeked. If you are a Frank Zappa fan, I don't see how you could pass this up.*

From Press Release:

Dingo the Clown

Dingo The Clown

Thursday, March 26 The Fez Ballroom
Zappa-Di-Doo-Dada, A Celebration Of The Subversive Genius Of Frank Zappa.
With performances by: The Jacob Merlin Band, The Dead Beetles and Professor Gall.

The event will showcase three one-of-a-kind Portland bands, each of which share the irreverent sense of humor and better than average chops of Zappa's bands.

Each band will perform its own unique, original music along with covers including music from Zappa's challenging repertoire.

Hosting the evening will be Portland's Jester-In-Chief, Dingo The Clown, who will impersonate Zappa while acting as Master Of Ceremonies.

Jacob Merlin will show Zappa's jazzier side, with sophisticated song writing and a line up including members pulled from the Portland jazz scene's A list.

The Dead Beetles, including The Cool Blue Horns, will present Zappa's eclecticism and R&B roots, with turn on a dime genre swaps and catchy, quirky originals.

Professor Gall (aka Drew Norman, formerly of The Cow Trippers and The Sort Ofs) represents the “creepy” side of Zappa.  The ensemble seeks to uncover the contradictions of an ambiguous society, “dreaming the existentialists' dream, while at the same time pleading for individualism, peace, and more fun at funerals.”

Dingo The Clown has been wowing crowds with his outrageous Read the rest of this entry »

Ladies Of The Night, The Wanteds & The Bits: March 26 | Rotture

Posted by Julian Chadwick

I've seen The Wanteds many times and PDX Pipeline has even done a show or two with Tommy/The Wanteds. It is always a great performance. I have not seen Ladies of the Night, but have heard good things about them as well. The Wanteds are worth $5 alone, so two more acts for $5 is a deal.

Ladies Of The Night, Portland, OregonLadies Of The Night, The Wanteds & The Bits

Bellingham Synth/Dance/Rock house party favorites Ladies Of The Night have relocated to Portland and are kicking off a fresh start Thursday 3/26 at Rotture w/ local mainstays The Wanteds

Ladies Of The Night sound has…
“a dark carnival rock-ish feel that will get anyone to at least bob their heads back and forth—if not get them dancing in a cemetery. It is not a Goth-rock album by any means, but the use of organ synthesizers in most of their songs gives it that "demon-clown/happy-evil"
--What's Up Magazine!

The Wanteds play Indie Rock with a heavy influence from 90's Alternative. They recently released an acclaimed new album and have been hitting the road ever since to growing crowds. This will be one of their few home town performances.

And local up and comers The Bits will open it all up.

Today: Decemberists Record Release & CD Signing | Music Millennium

Posted by Jeff Jacobson

For years I have tried to avoid the lahar of hype The RECORD RELEASE EVENT! THE DECEMBERISTS CD SIGNINGDecemberists have generated. Acclaim seems to erupt from every media outlet I encounter. Friends spew praise. The worship is thick and frothy, threatening to trap within its tumbling currents any who choose to wade in.

So, I've been cautious of the band.

Sure, I heard several of their songs on friend's stereos. The tones and harmonies were enjoyable but nothing revolutionary. Their sound consisted of skillful demonstrations of pop rock hooks with folk influences.

My mistake was in not actually listening to the lyrics. In May of last year I finally listened.

Shoulder to shoulder in an enormous crowd at Waterfront Park—a sea next to a river—I watched The Decemberists "open" for (then Senator) Obama. As I listened to the song Valerie Plame I fell in and began bobbing up and down.

Coming away from that experience, I'm impressed by the group. They play well, and manage to be both musicians and story tellers. I still don't experience the raving fandom of many of their listeners, but I can see where that mindset comes from.

Tonight at 6 pm, The Decemberists are playing a CD release party at Music Millennium for their new album The Hazards of Love. I'm going to see what happens to me at a second show. Read the rest of this entry »

It's Jakes Birthday! Caves, They Live, DJ Nightscool | March 25: Dunes

Posted by (& photos by) Julian Chadwick

If you have spent time at Aalto Lounge or Bye N Bye, you have probably met one Portland's most beloved bartenders-Jake of Caves. Tomorrow is Jake's birthday and Caves are playing at Dunes. Go have a good time and buy that man a drink*.

From Gatsby/They Live:
It's Jake Caves' bday so we're gonna get weird down @ Dunes 3/25. Caves, They Live, and DJ Nightschool (Brace Payne of The Gossip) & Son are playing. I vow to wear a sweater.

It's They Live's first PDX gig since their very first gig ever, which was also with Caves @ the Someday Lounge. We know the good dudes of Caves from the handful of awesome shows we've played with them as They Live or in my other crew, Cancer Rising. I look forward to partying hard, sleeping on their couch, and, with any luck, having a steak breakfast @ the Acropolis.

The “Weed Murder” video I linked you to has a guest spot from Barfly of Seatown's The Saturday Knights- who is actually the man who first introduced me to how awesome Caves were.

THEY LIVE is a bonafide 206/West Coast supergroup, consisting of Read the rest of this entry »

PSA: Portland Jobs, Portland Twitter, Portland Creatives, Portland Tech

Posted By Julian Chadwick

As we know, Portland's unemployment rate is growing & it is becoming much harder to find good jobs.

A few months back, I started a  Twitter Logo twitter account (@pdxjobs) to syndicate good & interesting jobs I found across the nets. Luckily, we live a great community here in Portland and many people have helped. From the beginning, other PDXers were sending me jobs to post. KGW even had me/@pdxjobs on “Live at 7″ to help people find jobs.

If you are on twitter, I hope @PDXJobs helps you. Also, send me jobs you find, retweet it & use #pdxjobs hash-tag so others can follow jobs across the search timeline.

Update: Have the beginings of a Website up as well: PortlandTwitterJobs.com

Because jobs range a great deal, I created a few others that cater only to certain fields. They aren't quite running yet but, they will within a week so follow them if you are looking for jobs in these fields

Boy Eats Drum Machine, aka BEDM, aka Jon Ragel, is super high-energy and has great stage presence. You wouldn't know to look at him, he's mild mannered as Clark Kent, but put him on stage with a sax, mic, drums, tambourine (yes, tambourine), and a couple records, and it's like he's a different person.

The best part is that he's *good*. BEDM is hitting multiple beat tracks at once, switch hitting from a sax solo to vocals and then back to scratching crazy break loops. He's even added video cams to his KAOS pad and turntable so you can try to process everything.

Sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen? That's what makes the show so much fun, so watchable! Like watching a tightrope walker, you can't help but gape in awe at what you're seeing. Even those who weren't there to see him couldn't help but crowd to the front.

Boy Eats Drum Machine plays often in Portland, so be sure to catch his next show!

Grindhouse Film Festival: "Kung Fu Jesus" | March 24 | Hollywood Theater

Usually Grindhouse Film festival is on Saturday nights and on Tuesdays I am sitting at home watching the 24/7 Seinfeld channel. Amazingly, I haven't seen this kung fu movie yet, but how can one pass up “a kung fu Jesus, and a death-match between a cat and a cobra“. Sorry Jerry, not this week.

From Dan of Grindhouse:

From wittcogmbh: Outside of City Hall in Portland, OR. The final meet up place for the Safe Routes to School bike rally (March 20, 2009–More info). Safe Routes to School is a program that is facing being cut due to budgets. We cannot let this happen. Safe Routes to School will bring back the idea that you can walk to school, bike to school, skip, if you want. Families need not be dependent on a car.

This is our family bike. There are usually 3 kids in the box. We decorated it to look like a pirate ship.
