SWAN Day PDX at Better Living Show: March 28th & 29th

Posted By Meagan Kate

swan-day-pdx-logo-color_0001

Saturday kicks off the second annual Support Women Artists Now Day celebration (or SWAN Day, as the kids call it). The event's collection of imaginative minds and bright eyes is something that Portland thrives on; we are a city of artists and of those who appreciate creativity.

It will not just be SWAN Day here in Portland on March 28th – it will be SWAN Day in 11 countries, at approximately 160 individual events. Ana Ammann is the reason we in Portland will be able to participate in this experience.

Ana's connection to Portland women in the arts led her, about a year ago, to information for this brand new international celebration. March 28, 2008 would be the first time SWAN Day would come to life – and Ana only had a few weeks to make something happen in Portland.

Through her connections to Siren Nation, POW Fest, pdx CreativeXchange and many other women's groups in the Portland area – Ana was able to have an entire exhibit hall at the Better Living show donated for the event. Ana's connections to writers, performers and to … well, artists – helped to slate the schedule for the day.

This free two-day event is a place for those who appreciate Read the rest of this entry »

2009 Portland Farmers Market: Video, Pictures & Updates

Posted By Julian Chadwick

Update: 2010 Portland Farmers Market Opens This Weekend + Pictures, Video & Expansion

In addition to enjoying all of these events in Portland this 2009 Portland Farmers Market Sausageweekend, you should really go the South Park blocks tomorrow for the Second Portland Farmers Market of 2009.

I was all over the Farmers Market last Saturday taking video, pictures, eating spicy brat sandwiches. For some reason, they have no mention of me or the Pipeline in the Facebook message they just sent out.

They just put “Mayor Sam Adams was one of the 9,000 people attending”.

Ummm…hello, rewrite:

Mayor Sam Adams & Julian Chadwick & Christine Taylor & Tom Erickson of Dear Ether were FOUR of the 9,000 people attending.

Much better.

Portland's 7th Annual Vampire's Masquerade Ball | March 27, 28

Posted By Kimberly Gehl

This Saturday night is the 7th Annual Vampire 7th Annual Vampire Masquerade BallMasquerade Ball, a night of celebrating the romanticism of gothic culture and the gothic aesthetic. While vampires strongly represent the premise of the night, the Vampire Masquerade Ball is about bringing together all who appreciate gothic/industrial culture, including romantic goth, death rock, fetish, industrial, victorian, post-punk, edwardian, etc.

It's about "drawing the Transylvanian diaspora from across the Globe to celebrate their common heritage March 28th in Portland Oregon."

The celebration is starting on Friday night with a Meet and Greet at Bossonava for veterans of the event and newbies alike. "Housed in the vintage 1930s grandeur of The Bossanova Ballroom, and organized by the creative minds behind The Wanderlust Circus and Societas Insomnia, our Meet-and-Greet party draws out the unique magick of The Vampire Masquerade Ball to fill an entire weekend."

As has become tradition, the Masquerade Ball will be held Saturday night at the historic Melody Ballroom starting at 9 PM. "Built in 1925 the Grand Ballroom complete with 30' foot ceiling, red walls, edwardian trim, crystal chandeliers, and spacious stage is again a perfect setting for this elegant night." Attendees should come dressed in gothic-themed clothing and masks are strongly encouraged (but are not required). Entertainment will include DJs, local performers and there will be vendors present, a photo booth, and a majestic waltz will take place at midnight.

Update: Interview: Aysia Wright of Green Loop | Better Living Show

Portland is the Most Sustainable City, according to SustainLane . But you already knew that. Portland pioneered sustainable living when the only green we were known for were our hills + smoking some. But now the national spotlight is on Portland + the glory stage is at the second annual Energy Trust Better Living Show this weekend @ the Expo Center.

In addition to celebrating our status (because really, who doesn't like to gloat) this show is packed with leading Portland entrepreneurs, businesses + resources to demonstrate why we're #1! I'm not usually one for “conventions”, but the combination of fashion, food, film + FREE (oh yeah, did I mention that?) hits this gal right in the green.

Here are a few highlights of the show. Or, where you might spot us…

Portland Theater: The Illusion at Public Playhouse | Last Weekend

This is the last weekend to the Illusion. Unfortunately, we slacked and didn't get someone out to cover this. However, I have heard nothing but positive reviews. This last weekend will most likely be packed, so you I suggest buying the tickets online/beforehand. Tonight is also Thursday discount night.

From Public Playhouse:
The Illusion, Porltand, OregonPublic Playhouse closes another exciting season with Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner's witty adaptation of a 17th century comedy. In this story of fantasy and deception, a father searches for his prodigal son. Reality and dream intersect in the cave of a magician, where visions are conjured and mysteries are revealed. What begins as a simple fairy tale evolves into a complex and elegant tale of the greatest illusion of all – love.

Kushner is best known for the epic Broadway hit, Angels in America. This groundbreaking author has been recognized as one of America's Read the rest of this entry »

Last Thursday at Goodfoot Lounge: Jesse Reno & Mike Fields

As usual, the Goodfoot Lounge is having a great Last Thursday art opening. Both of these artists are talented and I have seen their work several times. Jesse Reno's shows are not to be missed, and it is always great to see him on display on the high walls of Goodfoot Upstiars. Mike also runs two interesting Portland arts sites: artpdx.com & blackmarketculture.com

Last Thursday might be a big day for Alberta, but you'll find me on SE Stark.

From Jason at Goodfoot Lounge:
Goodfoot First Thursday, Portland, Oregon; Jesse RenoThe Goodfoot will have an art opening the last Thursday of March, the 26th from 5-11pm the show will be up until April 27th.  The artists this month are Jesse Reno & Michael Fields.

In the latest series of paintings by Portland-based artist Jesse Reno, shamanic beings struggle to find their place in a world simultaneously on the verge of expanding and collapsing. Totem animals and Native American figures reverberate memories of people who once lived as one with nature. Marked by symbols, these figures seek their dreams in the growth of trees and the passing of spirits. On their quest to find their true selves, they collect feathers and relics left by past encounters and past lives. They learn to transcend the boundaries of the rational world evolving into a collage of what they have become and encountered. In this body of work, Reno presents us with a journey leading inward to ultimately expand outward: “If you have moved wisely your dreams will still grow when you are gone.”

This will be reno's last show in portland before leaving for two museum exhibitions in france this coming may and june. it will serve as a release party for his latest book – lessons and skeletons – a collection of over 35 new works in full color full bled printing.  works in the show will range from 3x7ft paintings to 8x10in drawings the created between early 2008 up till im sure a few days before the show.

Michael Fields is a self-taught artist based in Portland, Oregon. Read the rest of this entry »

Get Mortified, Friends!: Someday Lounge | April 3, 4

Get Mortified, Friends! By Meagan Kate

Middle school was bullshit. I think we can all agree on that fact.

During this horrific phase in my life, I wrote a lot of sappy journal entries about how my parents didn't understand me and never would. I mentioned in these hastily scribed pages that I was absolutely certain I was the ugliest girl on the face of the Earth and would never make out with a boy, let alone have SEX with one!

I know, it's so silly! Because I'm so witty and beautiful and smart and beautiful and friendly. And beautiful.

It took twenty-two years, but I now realize I was not the only pre-teen with these insane thoughts regarding the desired sex and my parental units.

How did I realize this, you ask?

It wasn't a revelation that Oprah provided through her Book Club. It wasn't my shrink. It wasn't a discussion with a friend. It was watching strangers tell their story.

A few months ago, I headed to Someday Lounge for Mortified. Though the name intrigued me, all I knew was that I would be watching people read their diaries from childhood. For the next few hours, I stood in the back of the crowded room laughing hysterically as a Read the rest of this entry »
