From MisterConnolly

There are going to be almost four days of Lindy Hop, Swing, and other vintage dancing going on this weekend at the Portland Lindy Exchange. What is a Lindy Exchange you ask? Well it's an event where a city plans a whole bunch of non-stop dancing and live music for a weekend, and people from near and far to get very little sleep, make some new friends, and dance, dance, dance! The “exchange” part is where local dancers open up their couches and floors to those that are visiting for the very little sleep that many dancers are going to get.

The first dance started Thursday at 8:30pm at the PPAA. That's the Portland Policeman's Athletic Association. Bet you have seen the neon sign behind Maiden In The Mist plenty of times but didn't know that Portland's finest have their very own ballroom from days of old. Well.. tonight's dance and show is sporting the live music of Portland's very own Bridgetown Sextets.

Beginning dancers are always welcome, but even if you have a Read the rest of this entry »

75+ Portland Weekend Events & Parties | March 5-8

Leigh just sent out his weekly email of Portland weekend events. It is reproduced below. You can receive the email as well by writing Leigh at twocliche@gmail.com.

There are many listings so we have put events in red that we think will be good, well attended, or should be interesting.

From Leigh:
This first Friday Hot Mess celebrates its 2-year Portland Skylineanniversary! For those that have been, you know the deal. For those that haven't — watch the video with Mr. Bananas and see how bananas it gets. It's pretty out of control. I am definitely biased, but it's my vote for Portland's best dance party.

Of course there is a ton of other stuff going on this week as well. Like most weekends there is art, fashion, music, theater and even a prom party, a costume party and multiple tribute nights. Plus it is First Thursday.

See you out and about, Leigh Feldman

Holocen, Reading Frenzy

by Arthur Smid

In the last 14+ years Reading Frenzy has brought you hundreds of free literary and art events, thousands of hard to find titles, hosted numerous benefits for local non-profits, inspired projects, helped launched careers, and even played matchmaker a few times. As a business that puts purpose before profit we need a little extra love every now and then. So bring it on and bring some friends with you while you're at it!

March 5th, 8:30 pm with Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein, Golden Bears, Willy Vlautin, Tu Fawning, Arthur Bradford. Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison, 21+, $8-$20 sliding scale at the door,  Tickets on Sale Online

“I like the work ethic of writing a lot more than I like the work ethic of being in a band — which is traveling and playing gigs,” Willy Vlautin says. “Writing is just work.” Vlautin would rather work on his books, but it is nearly springtime. His alt-country band Richmond Fontaine tours three months of every year — half in Fall and the other in Spring. Their new album is 13 Cities.

“I live in Scappose, Oregon. Last month I got an office in St. Johns for a while. I live out in the middle of nowhere, and for this new book that I'm writing I need a city. St. Johns is the type of place for me. It's got great bars and a great feel to it.”

“Do you portray the self-destruction of alcoholics in the books?” I ask.

“If you haven't read 'em then you don't know.”

“You don't look like you're about to destroy yourself,” I observe.

“No man,” Vlautin launches. “I try to keep my shit together. I don't know, you'd have to read the books to see what you thought.” Vlautin composes himself. I see the expression of his soul written on his face. “They're not all alcoholics. Alcohol is one line. It's a sliver of somebody. Really.” Vlautin shifts in his seat to look me in the eye. His face is gentle. “I can write a lot about drinking because I grew up around heavy drinkers. They say you write about what you understand and I understand that. I can understand alcohol and violence.” Read the rest of this entry

First Thursday in Portland: Hecklewood Gallery | March 5th

I haven't ever been to Hecklewood Gallery, but they got me with free PBR and a basketball-playing Jesus in the flyer (naturally, Jesus wears #23). Plus, they have Rev Shines. If you are in the Old Town area tonight, you might want to stop by and grab a Blue Ribbon.
