‘Portland is better than Brooklyn' + Weekend Events: February 19-22

'Portland is better than Brooklyn' + Weekend Events: February 19-22

The information below is from Leigh's Portland party email. You can get the email as well by writing Leigh at twocliche@gmail.com. There are so many events that it is a bit overwhelming. Therefore, we have put events in red that we think will be good, well attended, or should be interesting.

Also, I called Leigh about these posters that state “Portland is better than Brooklyn”. They are apparently downtown near Saturday Market and the Crystal Ballroom for some band “Benefactor Magazine”. I've never been to Brooklyn, but they do (did) have the Beastie Boys and Tribe Called Quest. Point for Brooklyn. We have the Blazers and they have the Knicks. Point Portland…

From Leigh Feldman:

Portland Skyline

There are posters around downtown that say 'Portland is better than Brooklyn.'

As New York City (and Brooklyn) wraps up their fashion week, Portland enters two huge weekends of parties, events and couture to close out and coincide with all the happenings in our much bigger and much colder counterpart. This week Portland offers the Sweet FA fashion show and the Nicolle Shops Portland fashion party (take that Williamsburg!). Next weekend is Massive IV and the Benefit for Alec at the Benson (in your face Times Square!).

Ok, so maybe we don't have to offer all the fantastic things that NYC can, but our music scene is just as good, if not better. For proof, check out DJ Nature's 'For the Dust Live! Suckas' Mix. He's a local Portlander making a name for himself on the national scene. Hopefully he doesn't move to New York.

Audie Darling plays "Full of Ghosts" at Laurelthirst Feb 26th

By Arthur Smid

“Before I moved to Portland, I had basically only heard of Elliott Smith. I didn't know what the music 'scene' was going to be like,” Audie Darling explains, “and I still audie darlingprobably don't know shit about it. But now a lot of my favorite bands are from Portland. There is a huge amount of diversity, and I think that's really cool and I am happy to have my little place in it, whatever that means.”

By her own admission, Darling plays alt-country Americana. This describes her live show: A barroom stirring with people. A woman on stage singing with a guitar and a band of young dudes.

“I grew up in Nashville. My family relocated there from LA when I was about 2 or 3 because my dad is a musician. It was a good place for him to get work, and I saw him achieve some success, so to me, music was never an unattainable career. I have seen people make really good lives for themselves, and I have also seen people who have this big dream sacrifice pretty much everything for nothing.”

Darling handed me a copy of her new CD packaged in a hand-sewn felt bag with a small red heart stitched on the front. She said it had a kinda Mazzie Star thing. I can't confirm the reference but it's great make-out music. Audie Darling's new album “Full of Ghosts” plays a mystery soft with charged energy. Read the rest of this entry »

Putting the "ass" in art class at Dr. Sketchy PDX

Mirage at Dr. Sketchy Portland

By Nathalie Weinstein

It's 11 o'clock on a Thursday evening and I am sitting in the lounge of the Hawthorne Theater watching a man in a unicorn suit croon Fiona Apple's “Criminal” while playing the accordion. Once he has finished his tune, a sassy brunette with Betty Paige bangs and vinyl red leggings mounts the stage, and begins engaging in some rather unconventional poses with the unicorn. This is not an acid test. This is Dr. Sketchy PDX, a new brand of burlesque entertainment in Portland.

Part art class, part cabaret performance, Dr. Sketchy allows artists and voyeurs to sketch a lineup of pin-up models, who are more than happy to sneer and pout at the drooling crowd for ten minutes at a time. In between poses, the bevy of beauties (who have names like Baby Le'Strange, Green Orchid, and Hai Fleisch) perform raffles, judge impromptou art contests and make naughty balloon animals. Towards the end of the night, I feared I wouldn't get to see a nipple tassel. But my fears were quelled, when a lithe, porcelaine skinned beauty took to the stage in a very sexy praying mantis costume (that you'd have to see to believe), complete with the severed head of her lover, and began a slow, taunting strip tease that left me wondering if I might have a bit of an artist in me after all.

The next Dr. Sketchy PDX will be held at the Stumptown Comic Fest on April 18. For more information, visit http://www.myspace.com/drsketchiesportland. Read the rest of this entry »

This woman does a pretty good job here, but I don't believe she is a hula-hoop professional. There will be hula-hoop professionals called “Melody Jordan and Gang” at Backfence PDX this Wednesday.

You can buy tickets to the event at Mission Theater here at their website or if you are on twitter, you can answer our trivia question here and win free tickets. Read the rest of this entry »
