Portland Dance Party: Carnaval at Crystal Ballroom | February 28

Really, there are too many good options this Saturday night. In addition to all of these weekend events, there is the Pipeline sponsored Massive party, Benson Hotel Fashion show and benefit, Grindhouse Film Fest, and this Carnaval party at the Crystal.

I wish there were 5 of us…wait, there is and we will do our best to live update (pictures, information, live video) from as many places as we can. The easiest way now to get the updates is to be on twitter and follow @pdxpipeline and @pdxtweet.

If you don't like the twitter, we are working on a way to see live info around the city right here on the site in three weeks or so. If you want to help us with that project and go to great shows, take a look here: PDX Pipeline is growing. Want to join us?

From Carnaval press release:
Carnaval at Crystal Ballroom(PORTLAND — January 2009) In the spirit of the now defunct, but legendary, Dada Ball, Portland will soon have a new annual party tradition, this time masquerading in the guise of Brazilian Mardi Gras.

CARNAVAL BRASILEIRO, makes its explosive Portland debut Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. at the Crystal Ballroom, 1332 West Burnside.
Organized by the producers of a similar event in Austin, Texas which is now the largest indoor Brazilian carnaval celebration anywhere on the globe, Carnaval Portland will offer a heady mix of the irresistible, sensual pulse of samba drums, an endless parade of exotic costumes, and the uninhibited, enthusiastic euphoria of a packed dance floor.

In Austin, 6,000 attendees have established this Brazilian-style festival as one of the most eagerly anticipated blowouts on the area's social calendar.
Just like the Dada Ball, Carnaval will encourage uninhibited revelry, as well as wildly creative, probably scandalous costumes. Carnaval, however, sports a 100-year history of very animated party music dating back to its early years in the streets of
Rio.

To fuel the festivities locally, two high energy bands will pump out fiery, rootsy, authentic Brazilian carnaval music. New York-based Grupo Saveiro will be making their first West Coast appearance. Saveiro has performed at countless carnavals on the East Coast, in Texas, Russia and other exotic locales, and has been frequently voted the Best Brazilian Band in the USA by the Brazilian Press Association. Individual members have played with everyone from Baden Powell and Marvin Gaye to Sun Ra and David Byrne. Read the rest of this entry »

Grindhouse Film Festival: The Toolbox Murders | February 28

Another great Saturday night of weird, I-can't-believe-they-made-this movie action from Dan of Grindhouse Film Festival. If you haven't been to one of these, they are a lot of fun and the movies are hilarious.

From Grindhouse:
On Saturday February 28th at 7:45 at the Hollywood Theatre, The Grindhouse Film Festival presents THE TOOLBOX MURDERS.  A rare 35mm print of this hardcore horror classic.

THE TOOLBOX MURDERS (1978) A killer terrorizes a community using the items in his toolbox as an arsenal of violent weapons.  It all begins with a series of strange killings at an apartment complex including a nightmarish nail gun scene.  The movie suddenly makes a sharp left turn when a girl is kidnapped, and actor Cameron Mitchell takes over with a chilling performance as the creepy, twisted psycho.  This is one of the sleaziest and most brutal films of the 1970's.  Don't miss it!

Plus, 35mm 70's horror trailers before the movie.  For more information: www.grindhousefilmfest.com The Grindhouse Film Festival is an independent production, not associated with the Hollywood Theatre.

Last Thursday at Goodfoot: John Wray & Derek Olsen | February 26

What what…John Ray aka “Ray shock“/ one of the Crazy Flipper Fingers is featured in the Goodfoot Last Thursday. And to top it off, Atom 13 will be there on the wheels of steel. Yep, this will be well attended and probably the best last Thursday party in PDX.

From Goodfoot:
john-wray-poster - goodfoot loungeThe Goodfoot will have an art opening Last Thurs, Feb 26th from 5-11pm, the show will be until March 23rd. This months artists are Derek Olsen and John Wray.

Derek Olsen is a painter, silk screener and tattoo artist currently working at Black Hole Tattoo & Body Piercing in Portland, Oregon. He often paints as an attempt to better understand the things that inspire him…be it a flock of birds, japanese wood block prints, old tattoo flash or a brass band marching down the street. Derek has a desire to comprehend what it is, how it makes him feel, and why it moves him. This show is a series of work ranging from small to large, with a set of free standing privacy screens as a utilitarian way to make large scale art work more accessible. Please enjoy his attempts at understanding.

John Wray grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana on the southeast side of town, sandwiched firmly between ghetto and farms. Read the rest of this entry »

Latte Art Battle to the Death: PDX Tamp Your Face Off! | February 26

OK, Pipeline likes the dark tar. We like to get “jacked up“. Below are some barrels we keep at Pipeline headquarters (or they are barrels from the remodeled Fred Meyer on SE 39th?–you decide). We often just scoop it out, rub it on our gums and eat it up. Who has time for the shot pullin'? Nope. Not us.

Why are we telling you about our smack caffeine problems? Because tomorrow is a Portland coffee showdown and if you are not “focused on the beans“—FOCUS now!

From January:
Fred Meyer SE 39th and Hawthorne, Portland, OregonMy name is January xxxxxx. Local coffee slinger and muckraker. We've been putting together a little event that your readers may dig. This event is part of a larger effort to unite the Portland coffee community.

We really want every coffee dork in this town to have an opportunity to jam with us. Oh, and you mortals are welcome too. If you haven't been to a barista jam before, you have not lived. A room full of people geeked out on coffee. . . drinking beer. . .smack talking. . . tasting. . . pouring. In a word: heaven.

Portland will be hosting the United Stated Barista Competition in early March. We hope that this event will be just the kick in the pants our fair city needs to get focused on the beans.
