From Summer Lewis:
Bagdad TheaterThe Future of Energy to Host: World Oil Supply: At the Turning Point? Presented by John Kaufman

Mercury Reporter Sarah Mirk covers: Guantanamo guard and prisoners on a speaking tour in the UK

[Edit: Sarah Mirk is a freelancer with the Mercury. In case the word "reporter" implies she's on staff.]

Mercury reporter Sarah Mirk is on the road covering a story and she just put her blog online: Guantanamo Voices

Guantanamo Voices is a blog tracking former Guantanamo Bay guard Chris Arendt and two former Guantanamo detainees, Moazzam Begg and Sami Al Haj as they travel around the UK together in the winter of 2009.

Laughing Planet Cafe in the Ecotrust Building

BY Arthur Smid

The Laughing Planet Cafe needs no introduction in Portland, but with the opening of their seventh store, it's high time for Richard Satnick to take a bow.

The success of the Laughing Planet Cafe is thanks to wholesome food at affordable prices, and it's opened doors for west coast farmers. Laughing Planet Cafe contributed to a chorus of local businesses calling for local produce from their food suppliers. "We go through onions. We need them all year," Richard Satnick, co-owner of Laughing Planet Cafe says. "

A big supplier can buy them from all over the country and buy depending on price. We said, find us a local onion and figure out how to store it — where are you going to put a years worth of onions?"

Laughing Planet Cafe sources its food primarily from Food Services of America. They are the first "broadline distributor" to become Food Alliance certified, a certifier that ensures sustainable food systems. "At first we used commercial chicken," Satnick informs me. "Now we use chicken raised in Washington. We had to grow to have the buying power, getting bigger allows the leverage." Whenever possible, Laughing Planet Cafe buys local — or as close to home as they can: local spinach, brown rice from California, beans from Central Bean co-op in Washington, produce from Gatto & Sons in Portland, and tofu from Ota, the family-owned Japanese tofu maker in SE Portland. Apollo Opening Night at Portland Center Stage | January 17

Apollo opens tomorrow night at Portland Center stage. If the mixing of Nazis, the space-race, and the civil rights movement doesn't pique your interest (what's wrong with you?), how about this bit of strangeness for Saturday's performance:

Normally, Portland Center Stage has a strict no cell phone in the theater policy.

But we thought that the deconstructed, multi-media rich experience of our World Premiere production of Apollo would be the perfect opportunity for our first experiment in blog- and twitter-friendly performance.

You can read more about this on the Mercury's Blogtown. Pipeline will be there “tweeting” this event as “authorized twitterers and bloggers”. You can follow this whole thing on twitter using this #Apollo tag (and for some reason, Germans seem to like this tag as well). If there are drinks and free food, I'm sure we will let you know as well.

From Portland Center Stage:
Apollo, Portland, Center Stage

NOVEMBER 10, 2008 — PORTLAND, OR. Award winning playwright/director Nancy Keystone explodes the myths that brought us to this present moment in the world premiere of Apollo, her epic multi-media exploration of the space race, its employment of former-Nazi scientists and its surprising intersection with the civil rights movement.

Inspired by a 1990 LA Times article about former-Nazi rocket scientist (and huge Apollo contributor) Arthur Rudolph, Apollo dives down the rabbit hole of America's race into space, seeking the strange truths, fascinating personalities and unforgivable compromises behind "the pinnacle of human achievement and progress" that was our trip to the moon. Part performance art and part deconstructed documentary, Apollo breaks Read the rest of this entry »
