Sam Adams Portland Rally Pictures And Video: Storm Large, Dan Savage

Sam Adams Rally
Sam Adams Rally, Portland, Oregon
Taken on January 23, 2009

This was near the beginning, and there are many more pictures from the rally on the PDX Pipeline flickr set including Dan Savage and Storm Large.

——————————–

Video of Dan Savage’s Speech and Storm Large leads the crowd in song.

This is nearly the complete video of Dan Savage’s speech last night. I think I missed the first 10 seconds. Anyway, it is probably NSFW and he gives a bit of the smack-down to the media pubs in town that have asked Sam Adams to resign (or told him to?).

Storm Large sang a couple songs at the rally. Matt Davis of the Mercury has a good breakdown of the event. In this video, Storm sings “Stand By Your Sam” and leads the crowd in the final verse. Also rather NSFW. If Sam has to step down, can Storm Large be our mayor?

Also, the camera that Storm grabs at the end to send a message to Sam is from Amy Ruiz. It looked like she was getting much better video than I due to her far superior camera, so…Amy, can we see it?

*Thanks to www.Brewcaster.com for brightening these up a bit to see the crowd.

**Update: Pete Forsyth sent this over to us: an open letter to the media, re: Sam Adams. In case you were wondering (you were not), we are not opinion media…our opinion is simply “More events and more free passes to said events”

If you have pictures or video from the rally, add it to the PDX Pipeline Flickr Group

Everyone Loves Mortified | Someday Lounge: January 23, 24

Mortified is one of the best events this weekend in Portland. As you can see, it is loved by all the media in Portland except us. That ends this weekend when the Pipeline rolls on down to Someday and jumps on this praise wagon. We will not be DENIED from the praise list want to miss out on an obviously swingin good time.

From Mortified:
Mortified, Someday LoungeMortified, the cult comedy sensation that recently celebrated its one-year anniversary in Portland returns to Someday Lounge for a two-night performance, January 23rd & 24th.  A new cast of brave performers will share their shame on stage in the show that has sold out nearly every performance since its debut in November, 2007.

Hailed locally by Portland Monthly, Willamette Week, Portland Mercury, Portland Tribune, Live Wire! and more. Mortified stars everyday people reading aloud their most embarrassing, pathetic and private teenage diary entries, poems, love letters, lyrics and locker notes… in front of total strangers.  Witness "personal redemption through public humiliation" in a refreshing show that is equal parts comedic, cathartic and voyeuristic.  The largest and longest running project of its kind returns featuring a collection of Portland's bravest souls.  Read the rest of this entry »

Oscars: Milk is nominated For 8 awards Including Best Actor for Sean Penn

AND including Best Director for Portland local, Gus Van Sant

Back in November, Pipeline attended the premier of Milk at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. It was a simpler time then. Snowpocalypse was a laughable thought, Oregon's unemployment rate was under 9%, and controversy-free Portland Mayor-elect Sam Adams talked about things more important than who slept with who and when. What a difference two months can make.

Here is the review:

Review: Portland (Harvey) Milk Movie Premier Event at Arlene Schnitzer

By Saundra Sorenson

Milk movie Premier, Arlene Schnitzer, Portland, Oregon

It was fitting that the red carpet premiere of Gus Van Sant's Milk opened with a riotous performance by March Fourth, a group of cabaret-inspired high school marching band refugees (and the requisite color guard hula girls and be-stilted cheerleaders), for, as visiting author John Hodgman put it at last week's Wordstock, Portland's chief exports appear to be "pot, cheddar, and neo-burlesque."continue reading here

The Craft of HUSH Records

Hush Records

BY Arthur Smid

The Decemberists' first album is on HUSH. Chad Crouch, purveyor of the record label, says, “I'm really interested in how technology dovetails with the music industry. I started, kinda, at the very beginning of the digital revolution, and by that I mean, we started with a CD burner before people really knew about CD burners — and it's amazing to think that was only ten years ago. In that time we've gone from … okay, I'd invite people over to record them and we'd cut a CD right in that same room, to having people, or recording myself for example, and releasing that song within minutes of finishing it to an audience of thousands … that's nuts, and that's really interesting to me.” HUSH Radio streams the abridged albums — segments of songs cross-faded in a rich introduction to the artists and their songcraft.

The Brody Theater Opens on Broadway

BY Arthur Smid

Brody Theater, Portland, Oregon"Please make mistakes," Brad Fortier, comedian and educational director at The Brody Theater explains, "they're essential to this art, because a lot of those mistakes can become very brilliant comedy if we utilize rather than minimize the mistakes." Fortier talks casually with students, "Improv training really opens a different way of being — when you eradicate insecurities around mistakes. With improv we're breaking social norms to get to this comedy." People come to the show to be entertained and maybe, with a desire to participate. One of the attractions of the theater is a chance to enroll in classes, overcome your fear of speaking in public, and be spontaneously creative with people.

The Brody Theater has been active in Portland for twelve years and just leased a new home at 16 NW Broadway. It's in the lower part of the Broadway Hotel, between Helen's Market and Ichiban Sushi. The Housing Authority of Portland welcomed the theater to Old Town in hopes of creating a positive alternative to the dive bars and dance clubs in downtown. Check their website for showtimes: www.brodytheater.com
